Impact of Note-Making Education on Information Retention among Adult Learners

Abstract

Information retention is an important aspect of effective learning because it enables learners to remember, recall, and apply knowledge acquired during educational activities. Note-making education involves teaching learners how to identify important information, summarize ideas, organize key points, and record information in a meaningful manner. However, some adult learners may experience difficulty retaining information presented during lessons, particularly when they lack effective techniques for processing and recording important content. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of note-making education on information retention among adult learners. Note-making education provides learners with practical techniques for recording information in an organized and meaningful way. These techniques may include identifying key ideas, using headings and subheadings, summarizing important points, selecting relevant details, and arranging information logically. Effective note-making encourages learners to actively process information rather than merely copying everything presented by an instructor. Through regular practice, learners can develop systematic approaches to recording and reviewing information. Information retention refers to the ability of learners to remember and recall knowledge after it has been presented or studied. Effective retention allows learners to retrieve relevant information during revision, assessments, and practical learning activities. Note-making education is expected to influence information retention by helping learners process important information, organize it in a structured form, and review it more effectively. Well-prepared notes may therefore serve as useful learning resources that support recall and continued understanding. The study will adopt a quasi-experimental research design. The population will consist of adult learners enrolled in selected adult education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected. Data will be collected using an information-retention test administered before and after exposure to note-making education. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of note-making education on information retention among the learners. The study is expected to establish that adult learners exposed to note-making education demonstrate improved information retention compared with their performance before the intervention. The findings are expected to indicate improvements in learners’ ability to recall important concepts, key facts, explanations, and other information presented during learning activities. This would suggest that structured note-making techniques can contribute positively to learners’ ability to retain and retrieve educational information. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education programmes. Adult education instructors may incorporate note-making activities into lessons and provide learners with practical guidance on selecting, organizing, summarizing, and reviewing important information. Regular note-making practice may encourage learners to become more active participants in the learning process and provide them with organized materials that can support revision. Adult learners, adult education instructors, programme coordinators, curriculum developers, and educational administrators are expected to benefit from the findings. Adult learners may develop more effective techniques for recording and recalling information, while instructors may gain practical approaches for strengthening learning and retention. Programme coordinators and curriculum developers may also use the findings to promote note-making as part of study-skills development in adult education programmes. The study recommends that adult education programmes should provide systematic instruction and practical activities on effective note-making techniques. Instructors should encourage learners to identify key information, summarize ideas, organize notes clearly, and review their notes regularly. It is concluded that note-making education has the potential to improve information retention among adult learners and support more effective learning and recall.
