Impact of Non-Formal Arts Education on Learning Participation among Adult Learners

Abstract

Non-formal arts education refers to organized learning activities in creative fields such as visual arts, music, drama, crafts, dance, and related artistic practices that take place outside the conventional formal school system, while learning participation refers to the extent to which adult learners actively enrol in, attend, engage with, and complete learning activities. Non-formal arts education can provide flexible and practical opportunities for adults to acquire creative knowledge and skills while accommodating their interests and everyday responsibilities. However, limited access to relevant arts learning opportunities may affect adults’ involvement in educational activities. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of non-formal arts education on learning participation among adult learners. Non-formal arts education may be delivered through community workshops, arts clubs, cultural centres, practical training sessions, creative projects, exhibitions, demonstrations, and informal learning groups. These programmes provide opportunities for adults to learn through observation, practice, experimentation, collaboration, and creative expression. The flexible nature of non-formal arts education can allow learners to acquire artistic knowledge and practical skills without being restricted to conventional classroom structures. Such learning experiences can also accommodate different levels of previous artistic knowledge and individual learning interests. Learning participation among adult learners involves their attendance at learning sessions, involvement in practical activities, contribution to discussions, completion of assigned tasks, and continued engagement with educational programmes. Adults may participate more actively when learning opportunities are relevant, flexible, practical, and connected to their interests. Non-formal arts education can therefore influence learning participation by creating engaging learning environments where adults can develop creative abilities, interact with other learners, and take part in practical activities. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will consist of adult learners participating in selected non-formal arts education programmes within the study area, from which a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on exposure to non-formal arts education and learners’ participation in learning activities. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of non-formal arts education on learning participation. The study is expected to establish that non-formal arts education has a significant impact on learning participation among adult learners. Adults exposed to relevant arts education opportunities are expected to demonstrate greater attendance, involvement in practical activities, engagement with other learners, and continued participation in learning activities. The findings may also indicate that flexible programme structures, practical learning experiences, and opportunities for creative expression encourage adults to participate more actively in educational programmes. The findings will have implications for adult education by demonstrating the potential of creative and practical learning experiences to encourage adults’ engagement in education. Adult educators can incorporate arts-based activities such as drawing, crafts, music, drama, dance, and creative projects into appropriate non-formal learning programmes. Such activities can provide alternative learning experiences that accommodate diverse interests and encourage active involvement among adult learners. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, arts instructors, community learning centres, cultural organizations, adult education providers, curriculum planners, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from flexible opportunities to develop creative knowledge and practical skills, while educators and programme providers may gain information for designing engaging non-formal learning activities. Policymakers and cultural organizations may also use the findings to strengthen the provision of arts-based adult learning opportunities. The study will recommend that adult education providers should expand access to relevant non-formal arts education programmes through community workshops, creative learning groups, practical training sessions, and arts-based learning activities. Programme facilitators should use practical and participatory approaches that encourage adults to experiment, create, discuss, and collaborate. Learning opportunities should also be scheduled flexibly to accommodate adults’ different responsibilities. The study concludes that well-designed non-formal arts education can provide an engaging pathway for increasing learning participation among adult learners.
