Impact of Literacy Education on Adults’ Ability to Complete Employment Applications

Abstract

Literacy education equips adults with the ability to read, write, interpret, and communicate information required for everyday activities. Completing employment applications often requires applicants to understand written instructions, provide accurate personal information, interpret questions, and supply relevant educational or work details. However, adults with limited literacy skills may experience difficulties when completing employment application forms independently. This study will examine the impact of literacy education on adults’ ability to complete employment applications, with the purpose of determining whether literacy education improves adults’ competence in understanding and completing employment application requirements. Literacy education involves learning experiences designed to develop adults’ reading, writing, comprehension, and practical communication skills. Through literacy classes, guided exercises, reading activities, writing practice, and functional learning tasks, adults can develop the skills required to interpret written information and provide appropriate responses. Functional literacy activities can also expose learners to everyday documents and forms, enabling them to apply literacy skills to practical situations. The ability to complete employment applications refers to adults’ capacity to understand application instructions, provide required personal information, enter educational and employment details, answer relevant questions, and complete application forms accurately. Literacy education can influence this ability by strengthening reading comprehension, writing accuracy, vocabulary, and understanding of written instructions. Adults who acquire functional literacy skills may therefore be better equipped to complete employment applications independently and correctly. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adult learners enrolled in selected literacy education programmes. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a practical employment-application completion assessment designed to measure exposure to literacy education and adults’ ability to complete employment applications. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that literacy education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to complete employment applications. It is expected that adults with greater exposure to literacy education will demonstrate stronger abilities to interpret application instructions, provide required information, and complete application forms accurately. The study may further establish that functional literacy activities that involve practical documents and forms are particularly useful in developing adults’ confidence and competence in completing employment-related applications. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of adult education. Adult educators may need to incorporate employment-related documents into literacy lessons so that learners can apply reading and writing skills to practical situations. Activities involving application forms, written instructions, personal information, and employment-related vocabulary may provide learners with opportunities to develop functional literacy skills that are relevant to everyday and employment needs. The study will be significant to adult learners, literacy educators, employment support organisations, adult education providers, and educational planners. Adult learners may benefit from improved ability to independently complete employment applications, while literacy educators may gain useful information for developing practical learning activities. Employment support organisations may also use the findings to design literacy-oriented assistance that helps adults navigate application processes more effectively. The study will recommend that literacy education programmes should incorporate practical exercises involving employment applications and other employment-related documents. Adult educators should provide learners with repeated opportunities to practise interpreting written instructions, completing forms, and supplying accurate information. Employment support organisations should also collaborate with literacy providers to strengthen adults’ functional literacy skills. The study will conclude that literacy education can contribute significantly to improving adults’ ability to complete employment applications independently and accurately.
