Impact of Indigenous Knowledge Education on Adults’ Preservation of Local Knowledge

Abstract

Indigenous knowledge education is an important approach for helping adults acquire knowledge about locally developed practices, experiences, skills, and traditions that have been transmitted across generations. Adults’ preservation of local knowledge refers to their ability and willingness to maintain, document, transmit, and continue using valuable knowledge developed within their communities. The gradual loss of local knowledge may occur when younger generations have limited exposure to traditional knowledge or when existing knowledge is not adequately documented and transmitted. The study therefore aims to examine the impact of indigenous knowledge education on adults’ preservation of local knowledge. Indigenous knowledge education exposes adults to locally developed knowledge through storytelling, demonstrations, community-based learning, oral history, practical activities, and interaction with experienced community members. These learning processes can help adults understand the origins, meaning, uses, and methods of transmitting local knowledge. By creating opportunities for adults to learn directly from community experiences and knowledgeable individuals, indigenous knowledge education can strengthen awareness of the importance of preserving valuable local knowledge. Preservation of local knowledge involves maintaining useful community knowledge, recording important information, transmitting knowledge to other generations, and ensuring that relevant practices are not unnecessarily lost. Adults can contribute to preservation through oral transmission, documentation, practical demonstrations, mentoring, and participation in community learning activities. Indigenous knowledge education can influence preservation by giving adults the knowledge and learning opportunities needed to identify valuable local knowledge, understand its significance, and apply appropriate methods for maintaining and transmitting it. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected indigenous knowledge or adult education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to indigenous knowledge education and adults’ preservation of local knowledge. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Descriptive statistics will be used to answer the research questions, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be employed to test the hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that indigenous knowledge education has a positive impact on adults’ preservation of local knowledge. Adults exposed to relevant educational experiences are expected to demonstrate greater willingness to document, transmit, maintain, and appropriately apply valuable local knowledge. The study is also expected to indicate that educational exposure can strengthen adults’ appreciation of community knowledge and encourage deliberate efforts to prevent the unnecessary loss of useful knowledge and practices. The findings are expected to have implications for the teaching and learning of adult education by demonstrating the value of incorporating appropriate local knowledge into adult learning programmes. Adult educators may use storytelling, practical demonstrations, community interviews, documentation exercises, and intergenerational learning activities to encourage adults to engage with local knowledge. These approaches can make adult education more culturally relevant while providing practical opportunities for learners to contribute to the continued preservation and transmission of valuable community knowledge. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, community knowledge holders, cultural organizations, and adult education programme planners. Adult learners may develop greater capacity to preserve and transmit useful local knowledge, while adult educators may gain information for designing culturally responsive learning programmes. Community knowledge holders may benefit from increased opportunities to share their knowledge, and cultural organizations may use the findings to strengthen local knowledge preservation initiatives. Programme planners may also use the study to incorporate appropriate community-based knowledge into adult education programmes. The study recommends that adult education programmes should provide structured opportunities for adults to learn, document, and transmit valuable local knowledge. Adult educators should collaborate with knowledgeable community members and employ participatory methods such as storytelling, demonstrations, interviews, documentation activities, and intergenerational learning. Programmes should also encourage critical evaluation so that preservation efforts focus on knowledge and practices that remain useful, appropriate, and beneficial. It is concluded that indigenous knowledge education can serve as an important avenue for strengthening adults’ efforts to preserve and transmit valuable local knowledge.
