Impact of Home-Maintenance Education on Adults’ Ability to Identify Common Household Defects

Abstract

Home-maintenance education refers to organized learning activities that provide adults with knowledge and practical skills for identifying, monitoring, and addressing common maintenance problems within the home, while the ability to identify common household defects refers to adults’ capacity to recognize visible faults, deterioration, or malfunctioning conditions that may affect household safety, comfort, or functionality. Early identification of household defects can help prevent minor problems from becoming more serious and costly. However, limited maintenance knowledge may make it difficult for adults to recognize signs of deterioration. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of home-maintenance education on adults’ ability to identify common household defects. Home-maintenance education can expose adults to information about common defects involving walls, ceilings, floors, doors, windows, plumbing fixtures, electrical fittings, and other household components. Through demonstrations, visual materials, practical exercises, discussions, and guided observations, adults can learn to recognize common signs of wear, damage, deterioration, and malfunction. Such educational activities can also help learners understand when a household defect requires attention and when professional assistance may be necessary. The ability to identify common household defects involves observing household conditions, recognizing signs of damage or deterioration, distinguishing normal wear from potentially problematic conditions, and identifying areas that require further inspection or maintenance. Adults who receive relevant home-maintenance education may develop greater awareness of these conditions and become better able to recognize defects in their living environments. The study will therefore investigate whether home-maintenance education contributes to improved household-defect identification among adults. The study will adopt an appropriate research design, such as a descriptive survey or quasi-experimental design, depending on the study setting. The population will comprise selected adults, from whom a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire, visual defect-recognition assessment, or practical identification checklist designed to measure adults’ ability to identify common household defects. The data obtained will be analysed using suitable descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that exposure to home-maintenance education improves adults’ ability to identify common household defects. Adults who receive relevant instruction are expected to demonstrate better recognition of visible deterioration, damaged household components, plumbing-related problems, and other common maintenance conditions. These expected findings would emphasize the value of practical home-maintenance education in developing adults’ capacity to recognize household problems at an early stage. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of practical household management within adult education programmes. Adult educators can incorporate photographs, demonstrations, household examples, inspection exercises, and scenario-based activities into home-maintenance lessons. These approaches can enable learners to apply theoretical knowledge to realistic household conditions and develop practical observation and identification skills. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, households, adult educators, community organizations, housing-related organizations, and professionals involved in household maintenance education. Adults may gain greater confidence in recognizing household defects and determining when further attention may be required. Educators may also use the findings to develop more practical home-maintenance learning activities that address common challenges experienced by adult household members. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate practical home-maintenance education focused on recognizing common household defects and understanding appropriate next steps. Visual materials, demonstrations, guided inspections, and practical identification exercises should be used to strengthen learning. Adults should also be encouraged to seek qualified professional assistance for defects involving technical, structural, or electrical issues beyond their competence. The study concludes that effective home-maintenance education can improve adults’ ability to identify common household defects and support timely attention to household maintenance problems.
