Impact of Goal-Setting Education on Adults’ Learning Planning Skills
Abstract
Goal-Setting Education refers to structured learning that equips adults with the knowledge and practical skills required to establish clear, realistic, and purposeful goals for their learning activities. Learning planning skills involve the ability to identify learning priorities, organize learning activities, allocate time, select appropriate resources, and establish steps for achieving intended learning outcomes. These skills are important because adults often have to combine learning with work, family, and other responsibilities. However, difficulties in setting meaningful learning goals may affect how effectively adults organize and plan their learning activities. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of Goal-Setting Education on adults’ learning planning skills. Goal-Setting Education introduces adults to practical approaches for identifying learning needs, establishing priorities, defining desired outcomes, setting realistic targets, and developing steps for achieving learning goals. Through discussions, practical exercises, guided activities, case studies, and individual planning tasks, adults can learn how to translate broad learning intentions into organized and achievable goals. These learning experiences can also help adults establish appropriate timelines and identify resources and activities that support the achievement of their learning objectives. Adults’ learning planning skills refer to their ability to organize learning activities systematically in accordance with identified educational needs and goals. This includes setting learning priorities, arranging tasks, allocating available time, selecting relevant resources, establishing timelines, and determining appropriate steps for achieving learning outcomes. Adults with effective learning planning skills are better positioned to organize their educational activities and make purposeful use of available learning opportunities. Goal-Setting Education can therefore provide adults with practical knowledge that supports the development of effective learning planning skills. The study will adopt a quantitative research approach using a survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education and continuing learning programmes. An appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to assess participants’ exposure to Goal-Setting Education and their learning planning skills. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures, while the collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics and relevant inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that Goal-Setting Education has a positive impact on adults’ learning planning skills. Adults exposed to goal-setting education are expected to demonstrate improved abilities to identify learning priorities, organize learning activities, allocate study time, establish realistic timelines, and select appropriate learning resources. The study may further indicate that practical goal-setting activities help adults develop more structured approaches to planning and managing their learning activities. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of Adult Education. Adult educators may need to incorporate practical goal-setting activities into adult learning programmes to help learners connect educational goals with realistic learning plans. Goal-formulation exercises, planning worksheets, guided activities, and progress-review tasks can provide adults with opportunities to practise organizing their learning. These approaches can make learning more purposeful and encourage adults to take greater responsibility for planning their educational activities. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, continuing education providers, and administrators of adult education programmes. Adult learners may acquire practical skills for organizing their learning activities and working toward clearly defined educational goals. Adult educators may gain useful information for designing learning experiences that strengthen planning competencies, while educational institutions may use the findings to improve learner-support practices and promote effective learning organization. The study recommends that Adult Education programmes should integrate Goal-Setting Education with practical learning-planning activities. Adult educators should guide learners in identifying realistic learning goals, prioritizing activities, allocating time, selecting appropriate resources, and establishing achievable steps toward their objectives. Learners should also be encouraged to review their plans regularly and make appropriate adjustments. The study concludes that Goal-Setting Education can contribute to improving adults’ learning planning skills and support more organized and purposeful learning.
