Impact of Gender Education on Adults’ Attitudes toward Equal Household Decision-Making
Abstract
Gender Education can play an important role in shaping adults’ attitudes toward equal participation in household decision-making. Household decisions may involve matters such as finances, family responsibilities, education, healthcare, major purchases, and other issues that affect members of the household. When decision-making is dominated by one person or influenced by rigid gender expectations, other household members may have limited opportunities to express their views and contribute to important choices. Gender Education can provide adults with knowledge that encourages awareness of gender roles, equality, participation, communication, and shared responsibility. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of Gender Education on adults’ attitudes toward equal household decision-making. Gender Education exposes adults to concepts relating to gender roles, equality, participation, shared responsibility, communication, and decision-making. Through discussions, case studies, group activities, reflective exercises, and analysis of household situations, adults can examine how gender expectations may influence who participates in household decisions. Such learning experiences can encourage learners to consider the importance of listening to different viewpoints and involving relevant household members in decisions that affect them. Exposure to these educational activities may also help adults examine traditional assumptions about decision-making and develop greater awareness of the value of cooperation. Adults’ attitudes toward equal household decision-making refer to their beliefs, perceptions, and willingness to support the participation of household members in making important decisions regardless of gender. Positive attitudes may involve recognizing the value of shared discussion, respecting different viewpoints, supporting joint decisions, and providing appropriate opportunities for household members to contribute. Gender Education may influence these attitudes by encouraging adults to critically examine gender-based expectations and consider more inclusive approaches to household decision-making. Improved attitudes may contribute to greater cooperation, communication, and mutual respect within households. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure participants’ exposure to Gender Education and their attitudes toward equal household decision-making. The research instrument will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while its reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Gender Education on adults’ attitudes toward equal household decision-making. The study is expected to establish that Gender Education has a positive impact on adults’ attitudes toward equal household decision-making. It is anticipated that adults exposed to relevant educational experiences will demonstrate greater support for shared participation, respectful communication, joint consideration of viewpoints, and inclusive decision-making within household settings. The study may further establish that discussions, case studies, and reflective activities help adults recognize the importance of reducing rigid gender-based expectations in household decision-making. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners in designing learning experiences that promote constructive attitudes toward shared household decision-making. Practitioners may incorporate family-related case studies, group discussions, role-playing activities, and reflective exercises that allow adults to examine different approaches to household decisions. Such activities can encourage learners to consider the benefits of communication, consultation, cooperation, and respect for the perspectives of household members. The study will be significant to adult learners, families, Adult Education practitioners, community organizations, and other stakeholders concerned with equitable participation and healthy household relationships. It is expected to recommend greater integration of gender-related discussions and practical decision-making activities into relevant Adult Education programmes. The study concludes that Gender Education can contribute to positive attitudes toward equal household decision-making by increasing awareness of gender roles, encouraging shared participation, and promoting communication, cooperation, and mutual respect among household members.
