Impact of First Aid Education on Adults’ Ability to Identify First Aid Materials

Abstract

First aid education provides adults with practical knowledge and competencies that can improve their preparedness to respond appropriately to minor injuries and emergency situations. The ability to identify first aid materials refers to the capacity to recognize common first aid supplies and distinguish them based on their names, appearance, and basic purposes. Adequate identification skills are important because adults may need to select appropriate materials when providing basic assistance while awaiting professional medical care. This study will examine the impact of first aid education on adults’ ability to identify first aid materials. First aid education can expose adults to practical learning activities such as demonstrations, item-identification exercises, discussions, visual materials, simulations, and guided practice. These activities can introduce learners to commonly used first aid materials and help them associate particular items with their basic purposes. Practical demonstrations can allow participants to observe and handle appropriate materials under guidance, while identification exercises can reinforce their ability to distinguish one item from another. Repeated exposure to first aid materials can make learning more practical and easier to retain. The ability to identify first aid materials involves recognizing commonly used supplies and distinguishing their basic functions within first aid situations. Adults may need to differentiate materials according to their intended uses and understand that not every first aid item is appropriate for every situation. Adequate identification knowledge can improve preparedness and support more organized responses to basic injuries. First aid education may therefore strengthen this ability by combining theoretical explanations with direct observation, demonstrations, identification activities, and practical exercises. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected first aid, Adult Education, community safety, and health education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate first aid-material identification assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to identify first aid materials. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of first aid education on adults’ ability to identify first aid materials. The study is expected to establish that first aid education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to identify first aid materials. Adults exposed to structured first aid education are expected to demonstrate improved ability to recognize common first aid supplies, distinguish between different materials, and associate them with their basic purposes. The study is also expected to indicate that practical demonstrations, item-identification exercises, and supervised learning activities can strengthen adults’ familiarity with first aid materials. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, first aid instructors, community educators, workplace safety trainers, and programme developers. First aid education programmes should incorporate practical activities that allow adults to observe, identify, classify, and discuss commonly used first aid materials. Facilitators should also emphasize safe handling, appropriate selection, and recognition of situations where professional medical assistance is required rather than relying solely on basic first aid materials. The study will be significant to adult learners, community members, workplace participants, educators, and organizations interested in emergency preparedness and safety education. It will recommend that first aid education programmes provide accessible and practical learning experiences involving demonstrations, identification exercises, and guided practice with appropriate first aid materials. The study will conclude that appropriately structured first aid education can improve adults’ ability to identify first aid materials and strengthen their preparedness to provide appropriate basic assistance when necessary.
