Impact of Family Educational Background on Adults’ Participation in Lifelong Learning

Abstract

Family educational background refers to the level and nature of educational attainment among members of an adult learner’s family, particularly parents and other close family members, while participation in lifelong learning refers to adults’ involvement in continuous learning activities undertaken throughout life for personal, professional, social, or intellectual development. The educational experiences within a family may influence the value attached to learning and the encouragement available for continued education. This study will examine the impact of family educational background on adults’ participation in lifelong learning, with the purpose of determining whether family educational background influences adults’ involvement in lifelong learning activities. Family educational background may be reflected in the educational attainment, learning experiences, and educational values of parents and other influential family members. Adults who grow up in families where education is highly valued may have greater exposure to discussions about learning, educational opportunities, and the importance of acquiring additional knowledge. Family members may also encourage adults to pursue further education, professional training, reading, or other learning activities throughout their lives. Participation in lifelong learning involves adults’ engagement in formal, non-formal, and informal learning activities after their initial education. It may include attending courses, participating in training programmes, acquiring new skills, reading for personal development, joining educational workshops, and engaging in self-directed learning. Family educational background may influence adults’ willingness to continue learning by shaping their experiences and attitudes toward education and the importance attached to continuous learning. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adults who have opportunities to participate in lifelong learning activities. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on respondents’ family educational background and their level of participation in lifelong learning. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that family educational background has a significant impact on adults’ participation in lifelong learning. It is expected that adults from families with higher levels of educational attainment may demonstrate greater involvement in lifelong learning activities. The study may further establish that exposure to educational values and experiences within the family is associated with adults’ willingness to continue acquiring knowledge and skills beyond their initial education. The findings will have implications for adult education practice and lifelong learning initiatives. Adult education providers may need to recognise the influence of family educational experiences when designing programmes aimed at encouraging adults to continue learning. Learning programmes can provide supportive and accessible opportunities for adults from different educational backgrounds to develop positive attitudes toward continuous learning and participate in relevant educational activities. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, lifelong learning providers, educational planners, families, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from increased awareness of the importance of continuous learning regardless of their family educational background. Adult educators and programme administrators may gain information for designing inclusive lifelong learning opportunities, while educational planners and policymakers may use the findings to strengthen strategies for promoting continued learning among adults. The study will recommend that adult education providers should develop accessible lifelong learning programmes that encourage adults from diverse family educational backgrounds to participate. Adult educators should provide appropriate orientation and encouragement for adults who have had limited exposure to educational experiences within their families. Families should also be encouraged to support continuous learning among adult members. The study will conclude that family educational background can influence adults’ participation in lifelong learning and should be considered when developing strategies for promoting continuous adult learning.
