Impact of Ethics Education on Adults’ Ability to Evaluate Ethical Dilemmas

Abstract

Ethical dilemmas arise when individuals are confronted with situations involving competing values, responsibilities, principles, or courses of action, making it difficult to determine the most appropriate response. The ability to evaluate ethical dilemmas enables adults to examine the issues involved, consider possible consequences, and make reasoned judgments before taking action. Ethics Education can provide adults with knowledge of ethical principles and analytical skills that support careful evaluation of difficult situations. This study therefore examines the impact of Ethics Education on adults’ ability to evaluate ethical dilemmas. Ethics Education can introduce adults to important ethical concepts such as fairness, honesty, responsibility, respect, accountability, rights, duties, and consequences. Through structured lessons, case studies, discussions, role-play, and problem-solving activities, learners can examine situations in which different values or responsibilities may conflict. Such activities can help adults consider alternative courses of action, identify the ethical principles involved, and understand the possible consequences of different decisions. Practical exposure to ethical cases may therefore strengthen their ability to approach difficult situations systematically. The ability to evaluate ethical dilemmas involves identifying the competing considerations in a situation, examining possible alternatives, considering relevant ethical principles, and assessing the likely consequences of different actions. Adults need to move beyond immediate personal preferences and carefully consider the responsibilities and values associated with each possible response. Ethics Education can strengthen this ability by providing opportunities to analyze realistic situations and justify decisions using clearly understood ethical principles. Improved competence in evaluating ethical dilemmas can support responsible judgment in personal, occupational, and community settings. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to evaluate ethical dilemmas. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Ethics Education on adults’ ability to evaluate ethical dilemmas. The study is expected to establish that Ethics Education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to evaluate ethical dilemmas. Adults exposed to relevant ethics education are expected to demonstrate improved abilities to identify competing ethical considerations, examine alternative actions, apply appropriate ethical principles, and consider the consequences of possible decisions. The expected findings may further indicate that practical engagement with ethical cases enhances adults’ confidence and competence in making reasoned judgments when faced with difficult situations. The findings are expected to have implications for the design and delivery of Adult Education programmes. Adult Education practitioners may need to incorporate practical ethical-dilemma activities that require learners to examine realistic situations and justify possible decisions. Case analysis, group discussions, role-play, and structured decision-making exercises can provide opportunities for adults to develop ethical evaluation skills. Such activities can also encourage learners to consider different perspectives and recognize that responsible decisions require careful examination of relevant principles and consequences. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, programme planners, community organizations, employers, researchers, and other stakeholders interested in promoting responsible decision-making. It may provide useful evidence on the contribution of Ethics Education to adults’ ability to evaluate difficult ethical situations. The study recommends greater integration of practical ethics education and ethical-dilemma analysis into Adult Education programmes. It concludes that strengthening adults’ ability to evaluate ethical dilemmas can promote thoughtful judgment, responsible decision-making, and constructive participation in personal, occupational, and community life.
