Impact of Ethical Reasoning Education on Adults’ Ability to Justify Personal Decisions
Abstract
Ethical reasoning education is an important approach to developing adults’ ability to examine the ethical considerations surrounding their choices and provide reasonable explanations for personal decisions. It exposes learners to principles and processes that can help them consider values, responsibilities, consequences, fairness, and the interests of others when making decisions. Adults make personal decisions regularly, but some may find it difficult to explain the principles or reasons underlying their choices when faced with situations involving competing values. This study therefore examines the impact of Ethical Reasoning Education on adults’ ability to justify personal decisions. Ethical Reasoning Education can introduce adults to fundamental concepts such as ethical principles, moral values, personal responsibility, fairness, consequences, rights, and duties. Through guided discussions, case studies, role-play, reflective activities, and analysis of everyday situations, learners can examine different choices and the reasons that may support or challenge them. These learning experiences can encourage adults to move beyond simply stating what they would do and instead consider the ethical factors that influence their decisions. Practical engagement with realistic situations may therefore strengthen their ability to construct clear and reasoned explanations for personal choices. The ability to justify personal decisions involves explaining the reasons for a chosen course of action and relating those reasons to relevant values, principles, responsibilities, or expected consequences. Adults may make appropriate decisions but still experience difficulty explaining why their choices are reasonable or ethically defensible. Ethical Reasoning Education can improve this ability by encouraging learners to identify the considerations behind their decisions, compare alternative actions, and provide logical reasons for their preferred choices. This competence can support clearer communication, greater self-awareness, and more thoughtful decision-making in everyday situations. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to justify personal decisions. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Ethical Reasoning Education on the identified ability. The study is expected to establish that Ethical Reasoning Education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to justify personal decisions. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate greater ability to identify the reasons underlying their choices, apply relevant ethical principles, consider consequences, and provide clear explanations for their decisions. The expected findings may further indicate that regular engagement with ethical cases and reflective exercises strengthens adults’ confidence in explaining and defending their personal choices in a reasoned manner. The findings are expected to have implications for the content and delivery of Adult Education programmes. Adult Education practitioners may need to provide practical activities that require learners not only to select a course of action but also to explain and defend the reasoning behind their choices. Case studies, ethical scenarios, structured discussions, reflective writing, and decision-analysis exercises can provide opportunities for adults to develop this skill. Such activities can make ethical reasoning more practical and encourage learners to consider the principles and consequences that inform their decisions. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, programme planners, families, community organizations, employers, researchers, and other stakeholders interested in promoting responsible decision-making. It may provide useful evidence on the contribution of Ethical Reasoning Education to adults’ ability to provide reasoned justifications for personal choices. The study recommends greater integration of practical ethical-reasoning activities into Adult Education programmes, with emphasis on explaining, examining, and defending decisions using relevant reasons. It concludes that strengthening adults’ ability to justify personal decisions can contribute to more thoughtful judgment, clearer decision communication, and greater personal responsibility.
