Impact of Employee-Rights Education on Adults’ Ability to Interpret Workplace Policies
Abstract
Employee-rights education is important in helping adults understand the rights, responsibilities, rules, and procedures that guide relationships within the workplace. Workplace policies provide employees with information on matters such as conduct, attendance, grievance procedures, leave, workplace safety, disciplinary procedures, and other employment-related expectations. However, limited knowledge of employee rights may make it difficult for adults to understand and interpret workplace policies correctly. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of employee-rights education on adults’ ability to interpret workplace policies. Employee-rights education involves providing adults with knowledge about basic workplace rights, responsibilities, organizational rules, and procedures. It may include instruction on reading policy documents, identifying important provisions, understanding workplace terminology, recognizing employee obligations, and distinguishing between different workplace procedures. Discussions, practical examples, case scenarios, and guided interpretation of simplified policy documents can help learners develop the skills required to understand workplace information. Adults’ ability to interpret workplace policies refers to their capacity to read, understand, and explain the meaning and practical implications of workplace rules and procedures. Effective interpretation enables employees to identify what is expected of them, recognize relevant procedures, and understand the consequences of failing to comply with established policies. Employee-rights education is expected to improve this ability by giving adults the knowledge and skills needed to examine workplace policies more accurately. The study will adopt a suitable quantitative research design. The population will comprise selected adult learners or workers, from whom a representative sample will be drawn. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a workplace-policy interpretation assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of selected policy provisions. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of employee-rights education on adults’ ability to interpret workplace policies. The study is expected to establish that adults exposed to employee-rights education demonstrate improved ability to interpret workplace policies compared with adults with limited exposure to such education. Participants are also expected to demonstrate better understanding of workplace rules, employee responsibilities, organizational procedures, and the practical meaning of policy provisions. These improvements may enable adults to make more informed decisions regarding workplace responsibilities and procedures. The findings are expected to have implications for adult education by emphasizing the importance of workplace rights and policy interpretation within adult learning programmes. Adult educators and workplace trainers can use simplified policy documents, practical case scenarios, guided reading activities, and discussions to improve learners’ understanding of workplace policies. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, employees, workplace educators, trainers, employers, and organizations seeking to improve employees’ understanding of workplace policies and responsibilities. The study recommends that employee-rights education should be incorporated into relevant adult education and workplace training programmes, with emphasis on practical interpretation of workplace policies. Educators should provide learners with opportunities to examine realistic policy situations and explain their meaning and implications. It is concluded that employee-rights education can strengthen adults’ ability to interpret workplace policies and promote better understanding of workplace rights, responsibilities, and procedures.
