Impact of Domestic Violence Education on Adults’ Ability to Recognize Early Warning Signs

Abstract

Domestic Violence Education can play an important role in helping adults recognize behaviours and situations that may indicate an increased risk of domestic violence. Domestic violence can involve patterns of controlling, threatening, intimidating, or abusive behaviour within intimate or family relationships, and early recognition of warning signs may help individuals respond to concerning situations before they escalate. Adults who have limited knowledge of these signs may find it difficult to distinguish concerning behaviours from ordinary relationship disagreements. Domestic Violence Education can provide knowledge that promotes awareness, recognition, and appropriate responses to potentially harmful situations. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of Domestic Violence Education on adults’ ability to recognize early warning signs. Domestic Violence Education exposes adults to information about different forms of domestic violence, including physical, emotional, psychological, sexual, and economic abuse, as well as behaviours associated with control, intimidation, isolation, and threats. Through discussions, case studies, awareness activities, scenario-based exercises, and guided learning, adults can examine how warning signs may appear in different situations. Such educational experiences can help learners identify concerning behaviours and understand that harmful patterns may not always involve physical violence. Exposure to accurate information can also strengthen adults’ awareness of appropriate sources of support and the importance of responding to warning signs carefully. Adults’ ability to recognize early warning signs refers to their capacity to identify behaviours, patterns, or circumstances that may indicate potential domestic violence or an increasing risk of abuse. This ability involves distinguishing concerning behaviours from ordinary interpersonal disagreements and recognizing patterns such as intimidation, excessive control, threats, isolation, or repeated abusive conduct. Domestic Violence Education may strengthen this ability by providing adults with structured opportunities to examine realistic situations and identify relevant warning signs. Improved recognition can contribute to greater awareness and informed responses when adults encounter potentially harmful situations affecting themselves or others. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate scenario-based assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to recognize early warning signs of domestic violence. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Domestic Violence Education on adults’ ability to recognize early warning signs. The study is expected to establish that Domestic Violence Education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to recognize early warning signs. It is anticipated that adults exposed to relevant educational activities will demonstrate improved ability to identify concerning behaviours and distinguish potential warning signs from ordinary relationship disagreements. The study may further establish that scenario-based learning, discussions, and case analysis provide useful opportunities for adults to develop greater awareness of patterns associated with domestic violence and improve their recognition of potentially harmful situations. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners in developing learning experiences that promote awareness and early recognition of domestic violence. Practitioners may incorporate carefully designed scenarios, discussions, case studies, awareness sessions, and information about appropriate support resources into relevant Adult Education programmes. Such activities can help adults develop accurate knowledge while encouraging safe, respectful, and informed responses to situations involving possible domestic violence. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, families, community organizations, and other stakeholders concerned with violence prevention and personal safety. It is expected to recommend greater integration of accurate domestic violence awareness and early-warning-sign education into relevant Adult Education programmes, alongside information about appropriate support and referral services. The study concludes that Domestic Violence Education can contribute to adults’ ability to recognize early warning signs by strengthening awareness of concerning behaviours, improving recognition of abusive patterns, and supporting informed responses to potentially harmful situations.
