Impact of Consumer Education on Adults’ Ability to Identify Product Quality Information
Abstract
Consumer education refers to learning activities that equip adults with knowledge and skills for evaluating products and making informed purchasing decisions. The ability to identify product quality information is important because adults need to recognize relevant details that indicate the characteristics, suitability, safety, durability, and performance of products before making purchases. However, limited consumer knowledge may make it difficult to distinguish useful quality information from promotional claims. Therefore, this study examines the impact of consumer education on adults’ ability to identify product quality information. Consumer education can expose adults to important sources of product quality information, including product labels, descriptions, specifications, instructions, quality marks, expiry information, and other relevant details. Through practical demonstrations, product examples, label-reading activities, and comparison exercises, adults can learn how to locate and interpret information that helps them assess products. Such educational activities can strengthen their ability to examine product information before making purchasing decisions. Adults’ ability to identify product quality information refers to their capacity to recognize relevant information that provides evidence about the characteristics and suitability of a product. This includes identifying important details on labels, packaging, specifications, and product descriptions and distinguishing useful quality information from general promotional messages. Consumer education can strengthen this ability by providing adults with practical knowledge and opportunities to examine different types of product information. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will consist of adults participating in selected adult education programmes, while an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a practical product-information identification assessment designed to measure exposure to consumer education and adults’ ability to identify product quality information. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that consumer education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to identify product quality information. It is expected that adults exposed to relevant consumer education will demonstrate improved ability to locate important product details, recognize quality-related information, distinguish relevant information from promotional claims, and use available product information when evaluating purchases. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education programmes. Facilitators can incorporate product labels, packaging, specifications, descriptions, and realistic purchasing examples into consumer education lessons. Practical activities involving the identification and comparison of product quality information can help adults develop skills that are directly applicable to everyday purchasing situations. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult education facilitators, consumer education organizations, community learning centres, consumer protection agencies, and policymakers. Adults may benefit from improved ability to examine product information before making purchases, while facilitators can use the findings to strengthen practical consumer education. Consumer education organizations may also use the findings to develop programmes that promote informed purchasing practices. The study will recommend that practical product-information identification activities be incorporated into relevant adult education programmes. Facilitators should use real-life product labels, packaging, specifications, and product descriptions to help adults recognize and interpret quality-related information. The study concludes that effective consumer education can improve adults’ ability to identify product quality information and support more informed consumer decisions.
