Impact of Community Mapping Education on Adults’ Ability to Identify Local Resources
Abstract
Community Mapping Education refers to structured learning that helps adults understand how to identify, locate, document, and organize information about resources available within their communities. Local resources include human skills, institutions, facilities, natural assets, organizations, and other materials that can support community development activities. The ability to identify these resources is important because effective knowledge of available assets can help communities plan realistic activities and make better use of existing opportunities. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of the resources available within their communities. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of Community Mapping Education on adults’ ability to identify local resources. Community Mapping Education introduces adults to practical methods for observing, locating, recording, and organizing information about community resources. Through field exercises, guided observation, group discussions, mapping activities, community walks, and practical assignments, adults can learn how to identify important resources and determine their locations and possible uses. These learning experiences can also help adults distinguish between different categories of community resources and develop systematic approaches to documenting information obtained during community mapping activities. Adults’ ability to identify local resources refers to their capacity to recognize and locate useful human, physical, institutional, natural, and organizational assets within their communities. This ability involves observing community environments, identifying available resources, obtaining relevant information about them, and organizing the information for future use. Adults who can identify local resources are better positioned to contribute to community planning and development activities. Community Mapping Education can therefore provide the knowledge and practical experience necessary for improving adults’ resource-identification abilities. The study will adopt a quantitative research approach using a survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education and community-based learning programmes. An appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to assess participants’ exposure to Community Mapping Education and their ability to identify local resources. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures, while the collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics and relevant inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that Community Mapping Education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to identify local resources. Adults exposed to community mapping education are expected to demonstrate improved abilities to recognize, locate, classify, and document resources available within their communities. The study may further indicate that practical mapping activities and field-based learning enable adults to develop greater awareness of existing community assets and improve their ability to identify resources that can support community initiatives. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of Adult Education. Adult educators may need to incorporate practical community mapping activities into relevant learning programmes. Community walks, field observations, resource inventories, mapping exercises, group assignments, and locally based case studies can provide adults with opportunities to apply resource-identification skills in realistic settings. These approaches can make learning more practical and strengthen adults’ ability to connect educational knowledge with resources available within their communities. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, community development organizations, community groups, local development committees, non-governmental organizations, and programme administrators. Adult learners may develop improved knowledge of resources within their communities and become better prepared to contribute to community initiatives. Community organizations may benefit from members who can identify and document available resources, while adult educators may gain useful information for improving community-based learning activities. Programme administrators may also use the findings to strengthen community development components of Adult Education programmes. The study recommends that Community Mapping Education should include practical field-based activities that enable adults to identify, locate, classify, and document local resources. Adult educators should use community walks, mapping exercises, resource inventories, observation tasks, and group projects to strengthen learners’ practical skills. Community organizations should also encourage trained adults to participate in resource identification and documentation activities. The study concludes that Community Mapping Education can improve adults’ ability to identify local resources and enhance their capacity to contribute meaningfully to community planning and development.
