Impact of Community Leadership Education on Adults’ Meeting-Management Skills

Abstract

Community leadership education refers to organized learning experiences that equip adults with knowledge and skills for effective leadership and participation in community affairs, while meeting-management skills refer to the ability to plan, coordinate, conduct, control, and evaluate meetings effectively. Effective meeting management is important for ensuring orderly discussions, appropriate participation, efficient use of time, and achievement of meeting objectives. However, some adults involved in community organizations may experience difficulties in coordinating discussions, managing participants, maintaining focus, and ensuring that meeting decisions are properly addressed. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of community leadership education on adults’ meeting-management skills. Community leadership education provides adults with opportunities to develop leadership competencies through instruction, practical activities, group discussions, demonstrations, simulations, and problem-solving exercises. In relation to meeting management, such education can expose learners to meeting planning, setting objectives, preparing participants, managing the sequence of activities, encouraging participation, handling interruptions, and maintaining focus on agreed issues. These learning experiences can help adults understand the responsibilities involved in coordinating meetings and provide them with practical techniques for managing different meeting situations. Meeting-management skills involve the ability to establish meeting objectives, organize activities, manage time, coordinate participants, guide discussions, maintain order, encourage appropriate contributions, and ensure that agreed actions are addressed. Adults with effective meeting-management skills can create a more organized environment in which participants are able to contribute meaningfully and discussions remain focused on relevant issues. Community leadership education can strengthen these skills by combining leadership knowledge with practical opportunities to plan and conduct simulated or real-life meetings. The study will adopt a suitable research design to investigate the impact of community leadership education on adults’ meeting-management skills. The population will comprise selected adult learners or community members who participate in organized learning activities, from whom an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured meeting-management skills assessment or questionnaire. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of community leadership education on the identified skills. The study is expected to establish that community leadership education has a positive impact on adults’ meeting-management skills. Adults exposed to leadership education are expected to demonstrate improved abilities in planning meetings, managing time, coordinating participants, guiding discussions, maintaining order, and ensuring that meeting objectives are addressed. The study is also expected to indicate that practical leadership activities and meeting simulations can improve adults’ confidence and competence in managing different meeting situations. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of Adult Education. Adult educators can incorporate practical leadership and meeting-management activities into adult learning programmes to develop learners’ organizational and coordination skills. Role-playing, simulated meetings, group leadership tasks, case studies, demonstrations, and guided practice can provide learners with opportunities to apply meeting-management techniques. These approaches can make community leadership education more practical and encourage adults to transfer acquired skills to community organizations and other group settings. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, community leaders, adult educators, community organizations, voluntary associations, and other groups that depend on effective meetings. Adult learners may acquire practical competencies for coordinating meetings and managing group interactions, while community leaders may become better equipped to organize productive meetings. Adult educators may also gain useful strategies for developing leadership and organizational competencies among learners, while community organizations may benefit from improved meeting coordination and participation. The study recommends that community leadership education programmes should include practical training in meeting planning, coordination, time management, discussion control, participant engagement, and follow-up of decisions. Adult educators should use simulated meetings, leadership exercises, group activities, and constructive feedback to reinforce these skills. Community organizations should also provide opportunities for trained adults to apply their meeting-management competencies in practical settings. The study concludes that community leadership education can contribute significantly to improving adults’ meeting-management skills and strengthening their ability to coordinate productive and orderly meetings.
