Impact of Community Heritage Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Historical Landmarks

Abstract

Historical landmarks are important physical places, structures, monuments, and sites that represent significant aspects of a community’s history, culture, identity, and development. Community Heritage Education can provide adults with knowledge needed to identify, understand, appreciate, and preserve such landmarks. However, limited knowledge of historical landmarks may reduce adults’ awareness of their historical significance and weaken community interest in their preservation. This study will examine the impact of Community Heritage Education on adults’ knowledge of historical landmarks, with emphasis on how educational exposure can improve their awareness of landmark identification, historical significance, cultural value, and preservation. Community Heritage Education can expose adults to historical landmarks through community learning programmes, guided visits, discussions, visual materials, storytelling, demonstrations, and heritage-related activities. Through these learning opportunities, adults can learn about the origins, historical events, cultural meanings, physical characteristics, and community significance of important landmarks. Practical learning activities can also enable adults to observe heritage sites directly, examine available historical information, and discuss the importance of protecting landmarks from neglect, inappropriate alteration, and other forms of deterioration. Adults’ knowledge of historical landmarks refers to their ability to identify, describe, and explain the historical and cultural significance of important sites, buildings, monuments, and other physical heritage resources within their communities. Such knowledge may include awareness of the location, origin, historical events, cultural importance, architectural characteristics, and preservation needs of particular landmarks. Adequate knowledge can help adults appreciate the relationship between historical landmarks and community identity while encouraging greater interest in their protection. Community Heritage Education can therefore provide an important avenue for strengthening adults’ knowledge and appreciation of historical landmarks. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Community Heritage Education or Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of historical landmarks. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Community Heritage Education on adults’ knowledge of historical landmarks. The study is expected to establish that exposure to Community Heritage Education contributes to improved knowledge of historical landmarks among adults. Adults who participate in relevant learning activities are expected to demonstrate greater ability to identify important landmarks and explain their historical, cultural, architectural, and community significance. The study is also expected to indicate that guided observation, storytelling, visual materials, and direct engagement with heritage sites can make information about historical landmarks more meaningful and memorable to adult learners. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, heritage educators, community development facilitators, cultural organizations, historians, and adult learners. Educators may incorporate heritage-site visits, landmark documentation exercises, historical storytelling, visual presentations, and community discussions into relevant learning programmes. These approaches can help adults develop stronger connections with local heritage while encouraging greater awareness of the need to protect important historical places and structures. The study will be significant because improved knowledge of historical landmarks can strengthen adults’ appreciation of community heritage and encourage greater participation in heritage preservation activities. It will recommend that Community Heritage Education programmes provide accessible and practical learning opportunities covering landmark identification, historical significance, cultural value, documentation, and preservation. The study will conclude that Community Heritage Education can serve as an important avenue for strengthening adults’ knowledge of historical landmarks and promoting greater appreciation and protection of community heritage resources.
