Impact of Community Health Education on Adults’ Use of Preventive Health Services

Abstract

Community health education refers to organized educational activities provided within communities to improve adults’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices concerning health, while the use of preventive health services refers to adults’ utilization of services intended to prevent diseases, detect health problems early, and promote healthy living. Regular use of preventive health services is important for early detection and prevention of health conditions, yet inadequate health information may discourage adults from seeking or utilizing available preventive services. This study will examine the impact of community health education on adults’ use of preventive health services. Community health education may involve health talks, community meetings, awareness campaigns, educational discussions, demonstrations, and distribution of health information materials. These activities can provide adults with information about the importance, availability, timing, and benefits of preventive health services. Through accessible and culturally relevant education, adults may gain better understanding of preventive practices and become more informed about available health services within their communities. The use of preventive health services involves adults’ utilization of services such as routine health screening, immunization, health checks, counselling, and other appropriate preventive interventions. Regular utilization can support early identification of health problems and encourage timely preventive action. Community health education can influence this behaviour by improving adults’ knowledge of the benefits of preventive services, reducing misconceptions, and encouraging informed decisions about when and where to seek preventive care. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adults in selected communities participating in or exposed to community health education activities. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to community health education and adults’ use of preventive health services. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that community health education has a positive impact on adults’ use of preventive health services. It is expected that adults with greater exposure to community health education will demonstrate better utilization of appropriate preventive services than adults with limited exposure to such education. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in Adult Education by emphasizing the importance of practical and community-based health education. Adult educators can incorporate information about preventive services, health screening, immunization, routine health checks, and early detection into community learning activities. Participatory discussions and locally relevant examples can also make preventive health education more understandable and applicable to adult learners. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, community health educators, healthcare providers, community organizations, and policymakers involved in health promotion. Adults may benefit from improved awareness and utilization of preventive health services, while educators may gain evidence for strengthening community health education programmes. Healthcare providers and community organizations may also use the findings to develop more effective educational strategies for promoting preventive healthcare utilization. The study recommends that community health education programmes should provide adults with clear and practical information about available preventive health services and their benefits. Adult educators and health educators should use accessible teaching methods, community discussions, demonstrations, and locally appropriate educational materials to improve understanding. Collaboration between adult education providers and healthcare organizations should also be encouraged to strengthen preventive health education. The study concludes that effective community health education can contribute to improved use of preventive health services among adults.
