Impact of Communication Training on Adults’ Feedback-Giving Skills
Abstract
Communication training refers to organized learning activities designed to improve individuals’ ability to exchange information clearly, appropriately, and effectively, while feedback-giving skills refer to the ability to provide relevant, constructive, clear, and respectful responses about another person’s performance, behaviour, or work. Effective feedback giving is important for improving performance, correcting errors, encouraging learning, and strengthening interpersonal relationships. However, some adults may experience difficulties in expressing observations clearly, identifying specific areas for improvement, and delivering feedback in a respectful and constructive manner. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of communication training on adults’ feedback-giving skills. Communication training provides adults with structured opportunities to develop practical communication competencies through instruction, demonstrations, discussions, role-playing, simulations, and guided practice. In relation to feedback giving, the training can expose learners to techniques for communicating observations, using clear and specific language, focusing on relevant behaviour or performance, maintaining an appropriate tone, and suggesting constructive improvements. These learning experiences can help adults understand how effective communication contributes to the quality and usefulness of feedback. Feedback-giving skills involve the ability to identify relevant issues, communicate observations accurately, provide specific comments, suggest appropriate improvements, and deliver feedback in a respectful and understandable manner. Adults who possess effective feedback-giving skills can communicate useful information without creating unnecessary misunderstanding or discouragement. Communication training can strengthen these skills by giving adults opportunities to practise expressing feedback, responding to different communication situations, and receiving guidance on the clarity and effectiveness of their responses. The study will adopt a suitable research design to investigate the impact of communication training on adults’ feedback-giving skills. The population will comprise selected adult learners, from whom an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured feedback-giving skills assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to provide clear, relevant, specific, and constructive feedback. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of communication training on the identified skills. The study is expected to establish that communication training has a positive impact on adults’ feedback-giving skills. Adults exposed to the training are expected to demonstrate improved abilities in identifying relevant performance issues, communicating observations clearly, providing specific comments, suggesting appropriate improvements, and maintaining respectful communication when giving feedback. The study is also expected to show that practical exercises and simulated communication situations can improve adults’ confidence and competence in providing useful feedback. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of Adult Education. Adult educators can incorporate practical communication activities into learning programmes to develop learners’ ability to give effective feedback. Role-playing, peer-review exercises, group discussions, simulated workplace situations, demonstrations, and guided feedback activities can provide learners with opportunities to practise communicating constructive responses. Such approaches can make communication training more practical and enable adults to apply feedback-giving skills in educational, workplace, community, and interpersonal settings. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, workplace organizations, community groups, voluntary associations, and other institutions where effective communication is required. Adult learners may develop the ability to provide clearer and more constructive responses, while adult educators may gain practical approaches for teaching communication competencies. Organizations may also benefit from adults who can communicate performance-related observations effectively and provide feedback that supports learning, improvement, and cooperation. The study recommends that communication training programmes should include practical activities specifically focused on feedback-giving skills. Adult educators should provide learners with regular opportunities to practise giving clear, specific, respectful, and constructive feedback through role-playing, peer activities, simulations, and guided exercises. Constructive correction and continuous practice should also be used to strengthen learners’ communication abilities. The study concludes that communication training can contribute significantly to improving adults’ feedback-giving skills and their ability to communicate useful information for learning, performance improvement, and effective interpersonal relationships.
