Impact of Climate Information Education on Adults’ Household Preparedness

Abstract

Climate information education provides adults with knowledge and practical skills for understanding climate-related information and preparing their households for conditions that may affect daily life. Household preparedness refers to the actions taken by households to anticipate, organize for, and respond to potential climate-related challenges, such as excessive rainfall, flooding, extreme heat, or prolonged dry conditions. Adequate preparedness can help households protect people, property, essential supplies, and household activities. However, limited understanding of climate information may reduce adults’ ability to prepare appropriately for climate-related situations. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of climate information education on adults’ household preparedness. Climate information education can expose adults to information about climate conditions, seasonal changes, climate-related risks, early warnings, and available sources of climate information. Through structured lessons, discussions, demonstrations, visual materials, and practical examples, adults can learn how to obtain and understand climate information and identify situations that may require household preparation. Learning activities can also help adults understand how climate information can be translated into practical household decisions. Household preparedness involves measures that households undertake before or during potentially disruptive climate conditions. These measures may include protecting important household items, preparing essential supplies, planning responses to anticipated conditions, securing vulnerable areas of the home, and making arrangements for household members. Adults who understand relevant climate information may be better positioned to recognize potential risks and take appropriate preparatory measures. Climate information education may therefore strengthen household preparedness by improving adults’ ability to connect climate information with practical household actions. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to assess respondents’ exposure to climate information education and their household preparedness practices. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of climate information education on adults’ household preparedness. The study is expected to establish that climate information education has a positive impact on adults’ household preparedness. Adults who receive relevant climate information education are expected to demonstrate greater awareness of climate-related risks and stronger preparedness practices within their households. The study may also reveal improved ability to use climate information when making decisions concerning household protection, supplies, planning, and responses to anticipated climate conditions. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of practical environmental information in adult education programmes. Adult educators may be encouraged to incorporate climate information, household scenarios, visual materials, discussions, and practical preparedness exercises into relevant lessons. Linking climate concepts with everyday household experiences may make learning more meaningful and help adults apply acquired knowledge to practical situations. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, households, community learning centres, environmental educators, curriculum planners, and policymakers. Adult learners may develop improved knowledge for interpreting and applying climate information to household preparation, while educators may gain useful approaches for teaching practical climate-related skills. Curriculum planners and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen climate information and preparedness components within adult education programmes. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate practical climate information education that emphasizes household preparedness. Adult educators should use realistic household scenarios, climate information resources, visual materials, discussions, and practical exercises to strengthen learners’ ability to connect climate information with appropriate preparedness actions. It is concluded that effective climate information education can improve adults’ household preparedness and support more informed responses to climate-related conditions.
