Impact of Catering Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Food Presentation

Abstract

Catering education provides adults with opportunities to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can improve their competence in food preparation, presentation, hospitality, self-reliance, and income-generating activities. Food presentation involves the arrangement, decoration, and serving of prepared food in ways that enhance its appearance, appeal, and suitability for consumption. However, limited knowledge of appropriate food presentation principles may affect adults’ ability to present meals attractively and appropriately. This study will examine the impact of catering education on adults’ knowledge of food presentation. Catering education may expose adults to different aspects of food presentation, including portioning, plate arrangement, colour combination, garnishing, selection of appropriate serving dishes, food arrangement, table presentation, and basic presentation standards. Learning activities may include demonstrations, discussions, visual illustrations, practical food presentation exercises, and supervised catering projects. These activities can help adults understand how different presentation elements can be combined to improve the appearance and appeal of prepared food. Adults’ knowledge of food presentation refers to their ability to identify, explain, and apply basic principles and procedures involved in presenting prepared food appropriately. This may include knowledge of portion control, arrangement, garnishing, colour balance, serving dish selection, cleanliness, and attractive presentation. Catering education can strengthen this knowledge by combining theoretical explanations with practical demonstrations and hands-on activities that enable adults to observe and practise different food presentation techniques. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected catering education, adult learning, vocational, or skills-development programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and a food presentation knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of relevant principles, techniques, and practices. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of catering education on adults’ knowledge of food presentation. The study is expected to establish that catering education can improve adults’ knowledge of food presentation. Adults exposed to structured catering education are expected to demonstrate better knowledge of portioning, plate arrangement, garnishing, colour combination, serving dish selection, cleanliness, and attractive food presentation. The findings may also indicate that practical demonstrations and supervised presentation activities enhance adults’ ability to apply appropriate principles when presenting different types of prepared food. The study will conclude that catering education can provide an effective means of improving adults’ knowledge of food presentation. It will recommend that catering education programmes incorporate practical demonstrations, visual learning resources, appropriate serving materials, guided food presentation exercises, and opportunities for repeated practice. Improved knowledge of food presentation may contribute to greater catering competence, creativity, hospitality skills, self-reliance, entrepreneurship, improved food service, and income-generating opportunities
