Impact of Bias-Recognition Education on Adults’ Evaluation of Public Information

Abstract

Bias-recognition education is important in helping adults develop the ability to examine public information critically and determine how the presentation of information may influence understanding and judgment. Public information is communicated through news reports, public announcements, advertisements, social media, community messages, and other information channels, and may sometimes reflect selective viewpoints or emphasis. Adults who cannot recognize bias may find it difficult to evaluate public information objectively. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of bias-recognition education on adults’ evaluation of public information. Bias-recognition education involves providing adults with practical knowledge and skills for identifying signs of bias in information sources. It may include examining word choices, selective presentation of information, omissions, framing, source perspectives, and the balance of evidence presented. Through guided analysis, comparison of different information sources, discussions, and practical exercises, adults can develop greater awareness of how bias may influence the presentation of public information. Adults’ evaluation of public information refers to their ability to examine information critically by considering its content, evidence, source, presentation, relevance, and possible bias. Effective evaluation requires individuals to distinguish between information that is adequately supported and information that may be influenced by selective or one-sided presentation. Bias-recognition education is expected to strengthen this ability by improving adults’ critical reading, source analysis, evidence evaluation, and information-literacy skills. The study will adopt a suitable quantitative research design. The population will comprise selected adult learners, from whom a representative sample will be drawn. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a public-information evaluation assessment containing realistic information materials for participants to examine. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of bias-recognition education on adults’ evaluation of public information. The study is expected to establish that adults exposed to bias-recognition education demonstrate improved ability to evaluate public information compared with those with limited exposure to such education. Participants are also expected to demonstrate greater ability to identify selective presentation, examine source perspectives, assess supporting evidence, and recognize language that may influence interpretation. These improvements may enable adults to make more informed judgments when encountering public information. The findings are expected to have implications for adult education by emphasizing the importance of critical information-evaluation skills in adult learning programmes. Educators can use public announcements, news materials, advertisements, social media content, and other appropriate examples to provide learners with opportunities to identify bias and evaluate information critically. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, educators, community facilitators, workplace learners, and individuals who regularly rely on public information for everyday decisions. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate practical bias-recognition activities that enable adults to examine and evaluate public information critically. Educators should encourage learners to compare different sources, examine language and presentation, assess evidence, and consider alternative perspectives before accepting information. It is concluded that bias-recognition education can improve adults’ evaluation of public information and promote more balanced, informed, and critical engagement with information.
