Impact of Automation Education on Adults’ Attitudes toward Technological Change
Abstract
Automation education refers to the process of equipping individuals with knowledge about automated technologies, their applications, benefits, limitations, and effects on work and everyday activities, while attitudes toward technological change refer to adults’ perceptions, acceptance, openness, and willingness to adapt to emerging technologies. As automation continues to transform workplaces, businesses, services, and everyday activities, adults may experience both opportunities and concerns associated with technological change. Developing informed attitudes can therefore support effective adjustment to changing technological environments. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of automation education on adults’ attitudes toward technological change. Automation education can introduce adults to the meaning and applications of automation, including automated services, digital systems, smart technologies, robotics, and software-based processes. Through structured learning activities, adults can explore how automation performs routine tasks, supports productivity, changes work processes, and influences service delivery. Such education can also provide opportunities for learners to examine the potential benefits and challenges of automation and develop a more balanced understanding of technological developments. Adults’ attitudes toward technological change involve their willingness to accept, explore, adapt to, and appropriately respond to new technologies. Adults who acquire adequate knowledge about automation may be better positioned to understand why technological changes occur and how such changes can affect their personal, professional, and community environments. Increased understanding may reduce misconceptions and encourage more informed attitudes toward technological innovation, adaptation, and the changing demands of technology-supported activities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate attitude scale designed to measure participants’ attitudes toward technological change. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of automation education on adults’ attitudes toward technological change. The study is expected to establish that automation education has a positive impact on adults’ attitudes toward technological change. It is anticipated that adults exposed to relevant automation education will demonstrate greater openness to technological developments, increased willingness to learn about emerging technologies, and more informed perceptions of automation. The study may also reveal that practical knowledge of automated technologies helps adults develop balanced attitudes by enabling them to consider both the opportunities and challenges associated with technological change. The findings are expected to have important implications for Adult Education practitioners and programme developers. Integrating automation education into adult learning programmes can provide opportunities for learners to interact with examples of automated technologies, discuss their effects, examine common concerns, and consider practical ways of adapting to technological changes. Such activities may encourage greater technological confidence and help adults approach emerging technologies with informed and constructive attitudes. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, employers, technology users, community organisations, and policymakers concerned with technological adaptation. It is recommended that adult education programmes should incorporate practical automation education covering automated systems, technological innovation, workplace changes, benefits and limitations of automation, and strategies for adapting to technological developments. The study concludes that effective automation education can improve adults’ attitudes toward technological change and support more informed, confident, and constructive engagement with an increasingly technology-driven environment.
