Impact of AI Literacy on Adults’ Ability to Identify Potential AI Misuse
Abstract
Artificial Intelligence (AI) literacy refers to the knowledge and skills that enable individuals to understand, evaluate, and use AI technologies appropriately, while the ability to identify potential AI misuse concerns the capacity to recognize situations where AI may be used in harmful, deceptive, unethical, or inappropriate ways. As AI applications become increasingly common in communication, employment, education, business, and everyday decision-making, adults require adequate knowledge to recognize possible misuse and respond responsibly. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of AI literacy on adults’ ability to identify potential AI misuse. AI literacy provides adults with an understanding of basic AI concepts, common AI applications, automated decision-making, data use, privacy concerns, generated content, and the limitations of AI systems. Through AI literacy, adults can become more aware of the ways AI tools may be applied responsibly as well as situations in which their use may create ethical, social, or security concerns. Such knowledge can help adults develop the ability to question AI-generated information, examine how AI systems are used, and recognize circumstances that require caution or further verification. The ability to identify potential AI misuse involves recognizing inappropriate or harmful applications of AI, including deceptive content generation, unauthorized use of personal information, manipulation of information, discriminatory automated decisions, impersonation, and other irresponsible applications. Adults with stronger AI literacy may be better equipped to examine the purpose, context, and possible consequences of AI use before accepting or acting on AI-generated outputs. Therefore, AI literacy may contribute to improved awareness and identification of potential misuse in everyday and professional environments. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to identify potential AI misuse. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of AI literacy on adults’ ability to identify potential AI misuse. The study is expected to establish that AI literacy has a positive impact on adults’ ability to identify potential AI misuse. It is anticipated that adults with stronger knowledge of AI concepts, applications, limitations, ethical considerations, and risks will demonstrate greater ability to recognize suspicious, inappropriate, or harmful uses of AI. The study may also reveal areas where adults require additional knowledge to distinguish responsible AI applications from potentially problematic uses. The findings are expected to have important implications for Adult Education practitioners and programme developers. Incorporating practical AI literacy activities into adult learning programmes may help learners examine realistic AI-use situations, question questionable applications, assess potential risks, and make more informed judgments about AI technologies. Such learning experiences can strengthen responsible technology use and encourage adults to approach AI applications with greater awareness, caution, and critical judgment. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, community organisations, employers, policymakers, and other stakeholders interested in responsible technology use. It is recommended that AI literacy programmes should include practical activities on ethical AI use, privacy, deception, misinformation, automated decision-making, and other forms of potential misuse. The study concludes that strengthening AI literacy can provide adults with important knowledge and skills for recognizing potential AI misuse and making more responsible decisions in an increasingly AI-enabled society.
