Impact of AI Education on Adults’ Attitudes toward Responsible AI Use

Abstract

AI Education refers to organized learning experiences that provide adults with knowledge, skills, and awareness concerning the use, capabilities, limitations, and responsible application of artificial intelligence technologies. Adults’ attitudes toward responsible AI use are important because the increasing availability of AI tools requires users to approach them with awareness of ethical considerations, accuracy, privacy, fairness, and appropriate human judgment. However, limited understanding of AI and its responsible-use principles may contribute to careless or inappropriate use of AI technologies. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of AI Education on adults’ attitudes toward responsible AI use. AI Education can expose adults to concepts such as artificial intelligence, responsible technology use, data privacy, information accuracy, bias, transparency, accountability, human oversight, and ethical decision-making. Through discussions, demonstrations, case studies, and practical activities, adults can learn how AI tools operate at a general level and recognize situations in which careful evaluation is necessary. Such educational experiences can also help participants understand that AI-generated information should be assessed critically and that responsible use requires appropriate human judgment. Adults’ attitudes toward responsible AI use involve their beliefs, values, willingness, and disposition toward using AI technologies in appropriate, careful, ethical, and accountable ways. Positive attitudes may be reflected in willingness to verify AI-generated information, protect personal information, consider potential bias, respect intellectual and privacy concerns, and maintain appropriate human oversight. AI Education may influence these attitudes by increasing adults’ awareness of both the potential benefits and limitations of AI while encouraging thoughtful decision-making when using AI tools. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education and digital-literacy programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate attitude scale designed to measure participants’ attitudes toward responsible AI use. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of AI Education on adults’ attitudes toward responsible AI use. The study is expected to establish that AI Education has a positive impact on adults’ attitudes toward responsible AI use. Adults exposed to relevant AI learning are expected to demonstrate stronger support for verifying AI-generated information, protecting personal data, recognizing potential bias, exercising human judgment, and using AI technologies appropriately. The study is also expected to indicate that practical AI education can strengthen adults’ awareness of the responsibilities associated with using artificial intelligence in everyday, educational, workplace, and community settings. The findings are expected to have important implications for Adult Education practitioners, digital-literacy educators, technology educators, and programme planners. Adult Education programmes may benefit from incorporating responsible AI-use principles into relevant digital-learning activities. Case studies, guided AI demonstrations, information-verification exercises, ethical decision-making activities, and discussions of responsible technology use could provide adults with practical opportunities to develop more informed attitudes toward AI. Such learning can also encourage adults to approach AI tools with appropriate caution and critical awareness. The study is expected to contribute to the understanding of how Adult Education can support responsible attitudes toward emerging technologies. It is recommended that Adult Education programmes provide relevant learning opportunities on AI capabilities, limitations, information verification, privacy, bias, accountability, and human oversight. Such programmes should combine conceptual knowledge with practical activities that encourage adults to evaluate the consequences of their AI-related decisions. The study concludes that effective AI Education can strengthen adults’ attitudes toward responsible AI use and promote more informed, ethical, and appropriate engagement with artificial intelligence technologies.
