Impact of Advertising Literacy Education on Adults’ Ability to Evaluate Promotional Messages
Abstract
Promotional messages are widely used to present products, services, ideas, and offers to audiences with the intention of attracting attention and influencing attitudes or decisions. Adults encounter such messages through television, radio, print media, websites, social media, and other digital platforms, making the ability to evaluate promotional content increasingly important. Advertising Literacy Education can provide adults with knowledge and skills for examining advertising claims, identifying persuasive elements, assessing information, and distinguishing promotional content from objective information. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of Advertising Literacy Education on adults’ ability to evaluate promotional messages. Advertising Literacy Education exposes adults to concepts relating to advertising purposes, persuasive communication, promotional strategies, advertising claims, audience targeting, and media presentation. Through practical advertisement analysis, discussions, case studies, group activities, and guided exercises, learners can examine how promotional messages are constructed and how different techniques may influence audience responses. Adults may learn to pay attention to claims, supporting information, language, imagery, endorsements, emotional appeals, and other features of advertisements. These learning experiences can strengthen their ability to examine promotional messages beyond their immediate persuasive appeal. Adults’ ability to evaluate promotional messages refers to their capacity to examine advertising content critically, assess the information presented, identify persuasive elements, and form reasonable judgments about the message. Effective evaluation requires adults to consider the clarity and relevance of claims, distinguish information from promotional language, and examine whether a message provides sufficient information for an informed judgment. Advertising Literacy Education may strengthen these abilities by developing critical thinking, media awareness, and information-evaluation skills. Improved evaluation skills can help adults approach promotional messages more carefully before accepting claims or allowing advertisements to influence their decisions. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to evaluate promotional messages. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Advertising Literacy Education on adults’ ability to evaluate promotional messages. The study is expected to establish that Advertising Literacy Education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to evaluate promotional messages. It is anticipated that adults exposed to relevant advertising literacy education will demonstrate improved ability to examine advertising claims, identify persuasive features, distinguish promotional language from informational content, and assess messages more critically. The study may further establish that practical analysis of advertisements provides adults with greater confidence in questioning promotional messages and forming judgments based on careful consideration rather than immediate persuasive appeal. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners in designing learning activities that strengthen advertising and media evaluation competencies. Adult Education programmes can incorporate real-life advertisement analysis, comparative exercises, group discussions, case studies, and guided evaluation activities that allow learners to examine promotional messages from different media sources. These practical approaches can help adults apply advertising literacy skills to everyday encounters with commercial and promotional content. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, consumers, community organizations, media educators, and other groups concerned with informed interpretation of promotional information. It is expected to recommend greater inclusion of advertising literacy, critical media analysis, information evaluation, and persuasive communication awareness within relevant Adult Education programmes. The study concludes that Advertising Literacy Education can provide adults with useful knowledge and practical skills for evaluating promotional messages critically, thereby supporting more informed judgments and responsible responses to advertising content.
