Impact of Adult Learning on Adults’ Understanding of Public Space Design

Abstract

Public space design involves the planning and arrangement of shared areas such as parks, pedestrian areas, recreational spaces, community squares, markets, and other environments used by members of the public. Adult Learning can provide adults with knowledge needed to understand how public spaces are designed to promote accessibility, safety, comfort, functionality, social interaction, and environmental quality. Limited understanding of public space design may reduce adults’ ability to recognize important design features and participate meaningfully in discussions concerning improvements to shared community environments. This study will examine the impact of Adult Learning on adults’ understanding of public space design, with emphasis on how learning opportunities can improve their knowledge of the principles and features that contribute to functional and inclusive public spaces. Adult Learning can expose adults to public space design concepts through community learning programmes, workshops, discussions, visual materials, practical observations, and participatory activities. Through these learning opportunities, adults can learn about accessibility, pedestrian movement, seating arrangements, lighting, safety, landscaping, sanitation, recreational facilities, and the organization of shared spaces. Practical learning activities can also enable adults to observe existing public spaces, identify useful design features, and discuss areas that may require improvement. Such approaches can make public space design concepts more understandable and relevant to adults’ everyday experiences. Adults’ understanding of public space design refers to their ability to identify, explain, and appreciate the principles and features used in developing functional and suitable shared spaces. This understanding may include knowledge of accessibility, safety, comfort, movement, environmental quality, usability, social interaction, and appropriate organization of public facilities. Adequate understanding can enable adults to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of existing public spaces and develop informed opinions about their design and improvement. Adult Learning can therefore contribute to greater awareness of how design decisions influence the quality and usability of shared community environments. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of public space design. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Adult Learning on adults’ understanding of public space design. The study is expected to establish that participation in Adult Learning programmes contributes to improved understanding of public space design among adults. Adults exposed to relevant learning activities are expected to demonstrate greater knowledge of accessibility, safety, comfort, pedestrian movement, landscaping, lighting, sanitation, recreational facilities, and other important design considerations. The study is also expected to indicate that practical observation and participatory learning can help adults connect public space design principles with the conditions and needs of their own communities. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community development facilitators, urban development stakeholders, and adult learners. Adult Education practitioners may incorporate public-space observation exercises, visual demonstrations, community discussions, design examples, and practical evaluation activities into relevant learning programmes. These approaches can help adults develop the ability to examine shared spaces critically and understand how design choices can affect accessibility, safety, comfort, and community interaction. The study will be significant because improved understanding of public space design can enable adults to participate more effectively in discussions about the development and improvement of shared community environments. It will recommend that Adult Learning programmes provide accessible and practical learning opportunities covering basic public space design principles and the features that support safe, functional, accessible, and inclusive spaces. The study will conclude that Adult Learning can serve as an important avenue for strengthening adults’ understanding of public space design and promoting more informed participation in community development.
