Impact of Adult Learning on Adults’ Understanding of First Aid Priorities
Abstract
Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge that can improve their ability to respond appropriately to everyday situations and emergencies. First aid priorities refer to the order and importance assigned to immediate actions taken when responding to an injured or suddenly ill person before professional medical assistance becomes available. Understanding these priorities is important because inappropriate sequencing of actions may delay necessary assistance. This study will examine the impact of adult learning on adults’ understanding of first aid priorities. Adult learning can provide practical opportunities for participants to acquire first aid knowledge through discussions, demonstrations, simulations, visual learning materials, group activities, and guided emergency-response exercises. Learning activities can introduce adults to the importance of assessing a situation, identifying immediate dangers, seeking appropriate assistance, and prioritizing urgent needs. Simulated situations can allow participants to consider different emergency circumstances and determine appropriate priorities without relying solely on theoretical information. Such practical learning experiences can make first aid concepts more meaningful and easier to remember. Understanding first aid priorities involves knowing which actions should receive immediate attention and recognizing how priorities may change according to the circumstances of an emergency. Adults need to understand the importance of personal safety, assessment of the situation, appropriate communication with emergency services, and timely attention to life-threatening conditions. Adequate understanding can support more organized and responsible responses while waiting for professional assistance. Adult learning may therefore strengthen this understanding by combining explanations with practical examples, demonstrations, and scenario-based activities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education, community learning, and basic first aid programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of first aid priorities. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of adult learning on adults’ understanding of first aid priorities. The study is expected to establish that adult learning has a positive impact on adults’ understanding of first aid priorities. Adults exposed to structured learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved ability to identify urgent situations, recognize appropriate initial priorities, and distinguish immediate actions from those that can appropriately follow later. The study is also expected to indicate that demonstrations, simulations, and scenario-based learning can improve adults’ understanding of the sequence and importance of basic first aid responses. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community educators, first aid trainers, workplace learning facilitators, and programme developers. Adult learning programmes should incorporate practical first aid scenarios, demonstrations, and guided simulations that enable participants to apply knowledge to realistic emergency situations. Facilitators should also emphasize safe decision-making, appropriate help-seeking, and recognition of situations requiring professional medical assistance. The study will be significant to adult learners, community members, workplace participants, educators, and organizations interested in improving basic emergency preparedness. It will recommend that adult learning programmes provide accessible and practical education on first aid priorities using appropriate demonstrations and scenario-based activities. The study will conclude that appropriately structured adult learning can improve adults’ understanding of first aid priorities and strengthen their preparedness to respond appropriately while awaiting professional assistance.
