Impact of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Open Educational Resources
Abstract
Open Educational Resources (OER) are teaching, learning, and research materials that are made available for users to access and, depending on their licensing conditions, reuse, adapt, and share for educational purposes. Adult Learning can provide adults with the knowledge needed to identify, access, evaluate, and appropriately use OER for personal, academic, vocational, and lifelong learning. However, limited knowledge of OER may prevent adults from taking advantage of the wide range of educational materials available through digital platforms. This study will examine the impact of Adult Learning on adults’ knowledge of Open Educational Resources, with emphasis on how learning opportunities can improve their awareness of OER characteristics, accessibility, licensing conditions, and educational uses. Adult Learning can expose adults to OER concepts through demonstrations, digital-learning activities, workshops, guided searches, discussions, and practical exercises. Through these learning opportunities, adults can learn how to identify OER, locate relevant educational materials, access different types of resources, and determine whether materials are suitable for their learning needs. Learning activities can also introduce adults to common OER formats, including textbooks, videos, course materials, tutorials, and other openly available educational content. Such practical exposure can help adults become more confident in finding and using educational resources beyond conventional learning materials. Adults’ knowledge of OER refers to their ability to identify, explain, access, and appropriately use educational resources that are openly available under conditions that permit specified forms of use. This knowledge includes understanding the purpose of OER, recognizing relevant resources, evaluating their educational suitability, and understanding that openness does not necessarily mean unrestricted use without conditions. Adequate knowledge can help adults make informed decisions about the educational materials they access and encourage responsible use of resources according to their stated permissions or licences. Adult Learning can therefore strengthen adults’ capacity to benefit from open educational opportunities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of Open Educational Resources. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Adult Learning on adults’ knowledge of OER. The study is expected to establish that participation in Adult Learning programmes contributes to improved knowledge of Open Educational Resources among adults. Adults exposed to relevant learning activities are expected to demonstrate greater knowledge of how to identify, locate, access, evaluate, and appropriately use OER for different learning purposes. The study is also expected to indicate that practical demonstrations and guided exploration of online educational repositories can make OER more accessible and understandable to adults with different levels of previous learning and digital experience. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, facilitators, lifelong learners, community learning providers, and educational resource developers. Adult Education practitioners may incorporate OER demonstrations, guided resource searches, evaluation activities, and practical exercises into relevant learning programmes. These approaches can help adults develop greater confidence in locating useful educational materials while also encouraging them to pay attention to the conditions governing the use, adaptation, and sharing of openly available resources. The study will be significant because improved knowledge of OER can expand adults’ access to flexible and affordable learning opportunities and support continuous learning beyond formal educational institutions. It will recommend that Adult Learning programmes provide practical opportunities for adults to explore, evaluate, and appropriately use OER for educational and personal development purposes. The study will conclude that Adult Learning can serve as an important avenue for strengthening adults’ knowledge of Open Educational Resources and promoting greater participation in accessible lifelong learning opportunities.
