Impact of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Catering Utensils

Abstract

Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can support household management, vocational competence, self-reliance, and income-generating activities. Catering involves the preparation, presentation, and service of food and requires appropriate knowledge of the utensils used for different food preparation and serving tasks. However, inadequate knowledge of catering utensils may affect adults’ ability to identify, select, handle, and use appropriate utensils effectively. This study will examine the impact of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of catering utensils. Adult learning activities in catering may expose adults to different utensils such as knives, spoons, forks, ladles, whisks, spatulas, peelers, graters, tongs, measuring utensils, sieves, and serving utensils. Learning activities may include demonstrations, utensil identification exercises, discussions, practical food preparation activities, and supervised catering tasks. These experiences can help adults understand the characteristics, functions, appropriate applications, handling procedures, cleaning, and storage requirements of different catering utensils. Adults’ knowledge of catering utensils refers to their ability to identify, describe, classify, and explain the functions and appropriate uses of utensils employed in food preparation and service. This may include knowledge of utensil selection, handling, cleaning, storage, and suitability for particular catering tasks. Adult learning can strengthen this knowledge by combining relevant explanations with practical demonstrations and hands-on activities that enable adults to recognize different utensils and understand their appropriate applications. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult learning, catering, vocational, or skills-development programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and a catering utensils knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of relevant utensils, functions, applications, and care practices. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of catering utensils. The study is expected to establish that adult learning can improve adults’ knowledge of catering utensils. Adults exposed to structured learning are expected to demonstrate better knowledge of utensil identification, functions, selection, handling, appropriate application, cleaning, and storage. The findings may also indicate that practical demonstrations and supervised catering activities enhance adults’ ability to distinguish between different utensils and select suitable utensils for specific food preparation and service tasks. The study will conclude that adult learning can provide an effective means of improving adults’ knowledge of catering utensils. It will recommend that adult learning programmes provide adequate catering utensils, practical demonstrations, identification activities, supervised food preparation exercises, and opportunities for repeated practice. Improved knowledge of catering utensils may contribute to greater catering competence, food preparation efficiency, hygienic practices, self-reliance, vocational development, entrepreneurship, and income-generating opportunities
