Impact of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Basic Masonry Techniques

Abstract

Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can improve their participation in construction-related activities and enhance their ability to undertake basic building tasks. Masonry techniques involve practical knowledge of materials, tools, measurements, bonding methods, mortar preparation, block laying, and other procedures required for simple masonry work. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of these techniques due to inadequate access to structured learning opportunities and practical skill development. This study therefore examines the impact of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of basic masonry techniques. Adult learning programmes can provide practical and experience-oriented learning activities that enable participants to develop knowledge through demonstrations, guided practice, discussions, illustrations, and hands-on activities. In the context of masonry, adult learners can be introduced to the identification and proper use of basic masonry tools, preparation of mortar, measurement and alignment, block positioning, joint formation, and safe work practices. Such learning activities can make construction knowledge more accessible and encourage adults to apply acquired knowledge to practical situations. Adults’ knowledge of basic masonry techniques refers to their understanding of the materials, tools, procedures, measurements, and safety practices required for carrying out simple masonry operations. Adequate knowledge is important because errors in material selection, measurement, alignment, mortar preparation, or block placement can affect the quality and stability of masonry work. Adult learning may therefore contribute to improved knowledge by combining relevant explanations with practical demonstrations and opportunities for learners to observe and practise appropriate masonry procedures. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult learning or vocational programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of basic masonry techniques. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of basic masonry techniques. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult learning contributes positively to adults’ knowledge of basic masonry techniques. It is expected that adults exposed to structured learning activities will demonstrate better understanding of masonry tools, materials, measurements, mortar preparation, block laying, alignment, jointing, and basic safety practices. The study may also show that practical demonstrations and guided activities enhance learners’ ability to understand and retain construction-related knowledge more effectively. The study will conclude that adult learning can serve as an important avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of practical masonry techniques. It will recommend that adult education and vocational programmes incorporate more practical demonstrations, appropriate instructional materials, supervised hands-on activities, and relevant safety guidance into masonry-related learning. Such measures can strengthen adults’ practical knowledge, support skill development, and improve their capacity to apply basic masonry techniques effectively in personal, vocational, and community development activities.
