Impact of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Digital Accessibility Features

Abstract

QR-code information has become increasingly common in everyday activities, providing quick access to digital content such as product details, payment instructions, event information, public announcements, websites, and service resources. Adult Learning can equip adults with the knowledge and practical skills required to recognize, scan, access, and correctly interpret information provided through QR codes. However, limited familiarity with QR-code technology may make it difficult for some adults to understand the information accessed through these digital tools. This study will examine the effect of Adult Learning on adults’ ability to interpret QR-code information, with emphasis on how learning opportunities can improve their understanding and appropriate use of QR-code-based information. Adult Learning can expose adults to the basic concepts and practical processes involved in using QR codes. Through demonstrations, guided practice, digital activities, and participatory learning, adults can learn how QR codes function, how to scan them using appropriate devices, and how to access the information they contain. Learning activities can also introduce adults to different forms of QR-code information, including text, web links, service instructions, product information, and digital forms. Practical exposure can help learners become more confident in accessing and examining information obtained through QR codes. Adults’ ability to interpret QR-code information refers to their capacity to access, understand, evaluate, and appropriately use information obtained after scanning a QR code. Interpretation may involve identifying the source of the information, understanding instructions, recognizing relevant details, and determining whether the information is appropriate for the intended purpose. Adequate interpretation skills are important because simply scanning a QR code does not guarantee that the information accessed will be correctly understood or appropriately used. Adult Learning can therefore help adults develop both practical and analytical abilities for dealing with QR-code-based information. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and a practical assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to interpret QR-code information. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Learning on adults’ ability to interpret QR-code information. The study is expected to establish that participation in Adult Learning programmes improves adults’ ability to interpret QR-code information. Adults exposed to relevant learning activities are expected to demonstrate better ability to access QR-code content, identify important information, understand digital instructions, evaluate the relevance of accessed content, and apply the information appropriately. The study is also expected to show that practical demonstrations and guided activities can make QR-code technology more understandable and usable for adults with different levels of digital experience. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community learning facilitators, digital-literacy trainers, service providers, and adult learners. Adult Education practitioners may incorporate QR-code demonstrations, guided scanning exercises, practical information-evaluation activities, and real-life examples into relevant learning programmes. Such approaches can help adults develop confidence in using QR codes while also encouraging them to examine and understand the information obtained rather than relying solely on the act of scanning. The study will be significant because improved ability to interpret QR-code information can help adults access digital services, public information, product information, and other resources more effectively. It will recommend that Adult Learning programmes provide practical opportunities for adults to develop QR-code interpretation skills alongside broader digital information competencies. The study will conclude that Adult Learning can serve as an effective avenue for improving adults’ ability to access, understand, evaluate, and appropriately use information delivered through QR-code technology.
