Impact of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Basic Photo Editing

Abstract

Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical digital and creative skills that can support communication, personal expression, documentation, and vocational activities. Basic photo editing involves simple processes such as cropping, resizing, adjusting brightness and contrast, correcting colour, improving image clarity, and making appropriate basic enhancements. However, some adults may have limited understanding of these processes and may find it difficult to use photo-editing tools effectively. This study will examine the impact of adult education on adults’ understanding of basic photo editing and determine how structured learning experiences can improve their knowledge of fundamental photo-editing processes. Adult education can provide practical learning experiences through demonstrations, guided practice, visual examples, discussions, and hands-on digital activities. In photo-editing programmes, adults can be introduced to basic editing tools and taught how to perform simple adjustments using appropriate digital applications. Learning activities may involve demonstrating cropping, resizing, brightness adjustment, contrast correction, colour adjustment, image rotation, and other basic editing operations. Through repeated practice, learners can observe how different editing actions affect photographs and develop greater familiarity with basic photo-editing processes. Understanding basic photo editing involves knowing the purpose and appropriate application of common editing functions and recognizing how different adjustments can affect the appearance and quality of an image. Adults need to understand when and how to crop an image, adjust brightness and contrast, correct colours, resize photographs, and apply simple enhancements without unnecessarily reducing image quality. Adequate understanding can help individuals produce clearer and more appropriately prepared photographs for personal, educational, creative, and vocational purposes. Adult education may therefore strengthen this understanding by combining explanations with demonstrations and supervised digital practice. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education, digital literacy, and creative learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate practical assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of basic photo-editing processes. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of adult education on adults’ understanding of basic photo editing. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education has a positive impact on adults’ understanding of basic photo editing. It is expected that adults exposed to structured learning activities will demonstrate improved knowledge of common editing functions and their appropriate applications. The findings are also expected to indicate that practical demonstrations and repeated hands-on exercises can strengthen learners’ ability to perform basic adjustments and make informed decisions about improving the appearance and presentation of digital photographs. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, digital literacy facilitators, photography instructors, creative skills trainers, and programme developers. Learning programmes should incorporate practical demonstrations, step-by-step editing exercises, visual comparisons, and supervised use of appropriate photo-editing applications. Providing learners with opportunities to edit photographs and observe the effects of different adjustments can make learning more meaningful and help adults apply their knowledge to personal, educational, social-media, and vocational activities. The study will be significant to adult learners, digital skills providers, photography practitioners, content creators, community learning programmes, and stakeholders interested in practical digital skills development. It will recommend that adult education programmes provide suitable digital resources and sufficient opportunities for learners to practise basic photo-editing processes. The study will conclude that well-organized adult education can improve adults’ understanding of basic photo editing and strengthen their ability to make appropriate adjustments to digital photographs for different purposes.
