Impact of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Household Water Management

Abstract

Household water management involves the knowledge and practices required to obtain, store, use, conserve, and maintain water safely within the home. Adult education can provide adults with relevant information and practical skills for making responsible decisions about household water use and management. This study will examine the impact of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of household water management, with emphasis on appropriate water storage, efficient water use, conservation practices, and maintenance of household water sources. The study is motivated by the need to strengthen adults’ understanding of responsible household water management and encourage practices that support safe and sustainable water use. Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge through discussions, demonstrations, community learning activities, and other participatory learning approaches. In the context of household water management, adult learning can introduce participants to appropriate methods of water collection, storage, handling, conservation, and household water-source maintenance. It can also improve awareness of avoidable water wastage and encourage adults to apply simple management practices within their homes. Through relevant and practical learning experiences, adults can develop knowledge that is applicable to their everyday water-management activities. Adults’ knowledge of household water management refers to their understanding of appropriate ways to use, conserve, store, handle, and maintain water within the household. Adequate knowledge is important because poor water-management practices may contribute to unnecessary water wastage, contamination, inadequate storage, and inefficient use of available water resources. Adult Education can strengthen this knowledge by providing understandable information and practical guidance that connects learning with everyday household activities. Improved knowledge can therefore support more responsible decisions concerning household water use and management. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of household water management. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of household water management. The study is expected to establish that participation in Adult Education programmes is associated with improved knowledge of household water management. It is expected that adults who receive relevant educational information and practical learning experiences will demonstrate better understanding of water conservation, safe storage, efficient household water use, and proper maintenance of water sources. The findings may further indicate that practical and participatory learning approaches are useful for connecting household water-management concepts with adults’ everyday experiences and responsibilities. The study is expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community educators, facilitators, and organisations involved in environmental and community development programmes. Adult Education programmes may incorporate practical household water-management activities, demonstrations, discussions, and locally relevant learning materials to strengthen participants’ understanding. Such approaches can make learning more applicable to everyday household situations while encouraging adults to translate acquired knowledge into responsible water-management practices. The study will be significant to adults, households, community development organisations, Adult Education practitioners, and relevant stakeholders interested in improving household water management. It is expected to recommend the integration of household water-management education into appropriate community-based Adult Education programmes and the use of practical learning activities to reinforce knowledge. The study will conclude that strengthening adults’ knowledge through relevant Adult Education can contribute to more informed and responsible household water-management practices.
