Impact of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Glass Installation Techniques

Abstract

Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can support vocational development, employment, household improvement, and participation in productive activities. Glass installation involves the proper handling, measurement, positioning, fitting, securing, and finishing of glass materials in windows, doors, partitions, and other structures. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of appropriate glass installation techniques due to inadequate access to structured practical learning opportunities. This study therefore examines the impact of adult education on adults’ knowledge of glass installation techniques. Adult education programmes can provide practical and experience-based learning through demonstrations, guided instruction, discussions, illustrations, and supervised activities. In glass installation, adults can learn about different types of glass, basic installation tools and materials, accurate measurement, surface preparation, safe handling, positioning, fitting, securing, and finishing procedures. These learning activities can help adults relate theoretical explanations to practical experiences and develop a clearer understanding of the procedures required for effective glass installation. Adults’ knowledge of glass installation techniques refers to their understanding of the tools, materials, procedures, measurements, handling practices, and safety precautions required for carrying out basic glass installation activities. Adequate knowledge is important because inaccurate measurements, improper handling, poor positioning, unsuitable fixing methods, and inadequate finishing can affect the quality and safety of installed glass. Adult education may therefore improve adults’ knowledge by providing structured instruction, practical demonstrations, and opportunities to observe and practise appropriate installation procedures. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education or vocational programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of glass installation techniques. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of adult education on adults’ knowledge of glass installation techniques. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education has a positive impact on adults’ knowledge of glass installation techniques. Adults exposed to structured learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of glass types, installation tools, measurement procedures, surface preparation, safe handling, positioning, fixing, and finishing techniques. The findings may further indicate that practical demonstrations and supervised activities provide adults with better opportunities to understand and retain knowledge relating to glass installation. The study will conclude that adult education can serve as an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of practical glass installation techniques. It will recommend that adult education and vocational programmes provide appropriate tools and materials, practical demonstrations, supervised hands-on activities, and adequate safety guidance. Strengthening these learning opportunities can enhance adults’ practical knowledge, support vocational skill development, and improve their ability to apply appropriate glass installation techniques safely and effectively in relevant household and work settings.
