Impact of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Organize Information for Public Speaking
Abstract
Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge and practical competencies that can improve their communication, participation, and performance in different social, educational, and professional settings. The ability to organize information for public speaking refers to the capacity to select relevant information, arrange ideas logically, develop a coherent sequence, and prepare content that can be communicated effectively to an audience. However, some adults may possess adequate knowledge of a subject but experience difficulty arranging their ideas clearly before speaking publicly. This study will examine the impact of adult education on adults’ ability to organize information for public speaking. Adult education can develop this ability through discussions, presentation exercises, group activities, demonstrations, practical assignments, and guided communication tasks. These learning activities can help adults identify important information, separate major ideas from supporting details, establish logical relationships between points, and arrange content in an appropriate sequence. Learners can also be exposed to techniques for developing introductions, organizing main points, providing supporting information, and preparing effective conclusions. Repeated practice and constructive feedback can further improve their ability to structure information before delivering a public speech. The ability to organize information for public speaking involves several related skills, including information selection, logical sequencing, classification of ideas, identification of supporting details, and development of coherent presentation structures. Proper organization enables speakers to communicate their ideas in a manner that is easier for audiences to follow and understand. It can also improve speakers’ confidence by providing a clear structure to guide their delivery. Adult education may therefore contribute to improved information organization by providing learners with opportunities to analyse information, prepare presentations, practise speech structures, and receive feedback. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education, communication-skills, and continuing learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate public-speaking assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to organize information for public speaking. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of adult education on adults’ ability to organize information for public speaking. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to organize information for public speaking. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved ability to identify important information, arrange ideas logically, select supporting details, and develop coherent structures for oral presentations. The study is also expected to indicate that practical presentation exercises, guided speech preparation, group discussions, and constructive feedback can strengthen adults’ ability to organize information before public speaking. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, communication facilitators, public-speaking trainers, workplace educators, and programme developers. Adult education programmes should provide regular opportunities for learners to prepare and organize information for different speaking situations. Facilitators should also encourage participants to practise outlining presentations, sequencing ideas, identifying relevant supporting points, and reviewing their speech structures before delivery. The study will be significant to adult learners, educators, employees, community leaders, presenters, and organizations that require effective public communication. It will recommend that adult education programmes incorporate practical public-speaking activities that develop adults’ ability to organize information systematically before presentation. The study will conclude that appropriately structured adult education can improve adults’ information-organization abilities and enhance their effectiveness and confidence when communicating ideas before an audience.
