Impact of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Follow Written Instructions

Abstract

The ability to follow written instructions is an important functional skill because it enables adults to understand directions, complete tasks correctly, and respond appropriately to information provided in written form. Adult education provides learners with literacy, comprehension, and practical learning experiences that can strengthen their ability to understand and apply written directions. However, some adults may experience difficulties following written instructions because of limited comprehension, unfamiliar terminology, or difficulty identifying the sequence of required actions. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of adult education on adults’ ability to follow written instructions. Adult education exposes learners to structured reading and practical activities that require them to understand and apply written information. Through guided exercises, learners can practise identifying key words, recognizing sequential steps, interpreting requirements, and determining the appropriate actions described in written instructions. Repeated engagement with practical written materials can help adults develop systematic approaches to reading and carrying out directions. Such activities can make literacy learning more relevant to everyday tasks. The ability to follow written instructions refers to the capacity to read, understand, and correctly carry out actions specified in written directions. It involves identifying the purpose of the instructions, recognizing individual steps, understanding important conditions, and completing the required actions in an appropriate sequence. Adult education is expected to influence this ability by improving learners’ reading comprehension and practical application of written information. The study will adopt a quasi-experimental research design. The population will consist of adult learners enrolled in selected adult education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected. Data will be collected using a written-instruction performance assessment administered before and after exposure to relevant adult education activities. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of adult education on adults’ ability to follow written instructions. The study is expected to establish that adult learners exposed to adult education demonstrate improved ability to follow written instructions compared with their performance before the intervention. The findings are expected to show improvements in identifying required steps, understanding written directions, following sequences, and completing tasks based on stated instructions. This would suggest that adult education can contribute positively to adults’ ability to apply written information in practical situations. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education programmes. Adult education instructors may incorporate practical instruction-following exercises into literacy and learning activities. Learners can be given opportunities to work with appropriately selected written directions involving everyday and educational tasks. Such activities may strengthen the connection between reading comprehension and practical application. Adult learners, adult education instructors, programme coordinators, curriculum developers, and educational administrators are expected to benefit from the findings. Adult learners may develop greater competence in understanding and applying written directions, while instructors may gain practical methods for strengthening functional literacy. Programme coordinators and curriculum developers may also use the findings to improve practical reading activities within adult education programmes. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate regular activities that require learners to read, interpret, and follow written instructions. Instructors should guide learners in identifying important information, recognizing sequential steps, understanding conditions, and completing tasks according to stated directions. It is concluded that adult education can play an important role in improving adults’ ability to follow written instructions and strengthening their practical use of written information.
