Impact of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Evaluate Product Advertisements
Abstract
Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge and develop practical abilities that can improve their everyday decision-making. One important area is the ability to evaluate product advertisements, which involves examining promotional messages critically to determine their accuracy, relevance, clarity, and usefulness before making purchasing decisions. Adults may encounter advertisements containing exaggerated claims, incomplete information, persuasive appeals, or selective presentation of product benefits. This study therefore examines the impact of adult education on adults’ ability to evaluate product advertisements, with the aim of determining whether participation in adult education can strengthen adults’ capacity to assess promotional messages critically. Adult education can expose adults to advertising evaluation through discussions, practical exercises, case studies, media analysis, group activities, and consumer education sessions. These approaches can help learners identify common advertising techniques, distinguish factual information from promotional claims, examine product descriptions, and recognize persuasive strategies used to influence consumers. Through practical analysis of advertisements from different media platforms, adults can develop greater awareness of how advertising messages are constructed and how relevant information can be assessed before accepting promotional claims. The ability to evaluate product advertisements involves examining claims about products, comparing information presented in advertisements with available product details, identifying persuasive techniques, and determining whether promotional information provides a reasonable basis for consumer decisions. Adults with stronger evaluation abilities may be better positioned to question exaggerated claims, identify incomplete information, compare competing products, and make more informed purchasing choices. Adult education can strengthen this ability by providing learners with opportunities to analyse advertisements and apply critical evaluation techniques to real-life consumer situations. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to evaluate product advertisements. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of adult education on adults’ ability to evaluate product advertisements. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to evaluate product advertisements. It is expected that adults exposed to structured learning activities will demonstrate improved ability to identify advertising techniques, examine product claims, recognize incomplete or potentially misleading information, and distinguish useful product information from purely persuasive content. The findings may also indicate that practical advertisement-analysis activities are particularly useful for developing adults’ critical evaluation abilities in everyday consumer situations. The findings may have important implications for Adult Education practitioners, consumer educators, community educators, and organizations concerned with consumer awareness. Adult education programmes can incorporate practical advertisement analysis, comparison of promotional messages, discussions of consumer information, and exercises that require learners to assess product claims. Such activities may strengthen critical thinking and encourage adults to make more informed decisions when exposed to commercial advertisements. The study will be significant to adults, consumers, Adult Education practitioners, consumer education organizations, researchers, and policymakers interested in strengthening informed consumer decision-making. It is recommended that Adult Education programmes include relevant activities on advertising analysis, promotional claims, persuasive techniques, and evaluation of product information. The study concludes that appropriately designed adult education can provide an effective avenue for improving adults’ ability to evaluate product advertisements and supporting more informed consumer choices.
