Effect of Vocational Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Leather Processing Techniques
Vocational education provides adults with opportunities to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can support self-employment, income generation, and participation in productive activities. Leather processing involves several procedures through which raw hides and skins are prepared, treated, and transformed into materials suitable for different uses. These procedures require knowledge of appropriate tools, materials, preparation methods, treatment processes, drying, preservation, and quality considerations. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of leather processing techniques due to inadequate access to structured vocational learning opportunities. This study therefore examines the effect of vocational education on adults’ knowledge of leather processing techniques. Vocational education can provide adults with practical and experience-based learning through demonstrations, guided instruction, supervised practice, discussions, and the use of relevant tools and materials. In leather processing, learners can acquire knowledge of hide and skin preparation, cleaning, removal of unwanted materials, treatment procedures, drying methods, preservation practices, and appropriate handling techniques. Exposure to these learning activities can enable adults to connect theoretical explanations with practical experiences and develop a better understanding of the processes involved in producing usable leather materials. Adults’ knowledge of leather processing techniques refers to their understanding of the materials, tools, procedures, and practices required for processing hides and skins appropriately. Adequate knowledge is important because improper preparation, treatment, drying, preservation, or handling can affect the quality and usability of processed leather. Vocational education may therefore improve adults’ knowledge by providing systematic instruction, practical demonstrations, and opportunities to observe and practise appropriate leather processing procedures. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected vocational education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of leather processing techniques. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of vocational education on adults’ knowledge of leather processing techniques. The study is expected to establish that participation in vocational education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of leather processing techniques. Adults exposed to structured vocational learning are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of hide and skin preparation, cleaning, treatment, drying, preservation, handling, and basic quality considerations. The findings may further indicate that practical demonstrations and supervised activities provide adults with better opportunities to understand and retain knowledge of leather processing procedures. The study will conclude that vocational education can serve as an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of leather processing techniques. It will recommend that vocational education programmes provide appropriate processing tools and materials, practical demonstrations, supervised hands-on activities, and relevant safety and quality guidance. Strengthening these learning opportunities can enhance adults’ practical knowledge, support vocational skill development, and improve their ability to apply appropriate leather processing techniques for productive and income-generating activities.
