Effect of Vocational Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Basic Furniture Repair
Abstract
Basic furniture repair involves simple activities undertaken to restore, maintain, or improve the condition and usability of household, office, and community furniture. Knowledge of furniture repair enables adults to identify common furniture defects, select appropriate repair materials and tools, and apply suitable techniques to address minor problems. However, inadequate knowledge of basic repair procedures may result in poor maintenance practices and unnecessary replacement of usable furniture. Vocational education provides practical learning opportunities through which adults can acquire useful occupational and everyday skills. This study therefore examines the effect of vocational education on adults’ knowledge of basic furniture repair. Vocational education in this context involves practical and structured learning activities designed to expose adults to basic furniture repair principles and procedures. Learning activities may include demonstrations, guided practice, identification exercises, discussions, and supervised repair tasks. Participants may be introduced to common furniture problems such as loose joints, damaged surfaces, minor cracks, loose screws, and worn fittings, together with appropriate methods for addressing them. Practical exposure can help adults understand the relationship between furniture defects, repair materials, tools, and appropriate repair procedures. Knowledge of basic furniture repair refers to adults’ understanding of common furniture defects, repair tools, materials, techniques, and procedures required for simple furniture maintenance and restoration. Adults with adequate knowledge can recognize common problems and determine suitable approaches for correcting them. Vocational education can strengthen this knowledge by combining explanations with demonstrations and practical activities that allow learners to observe and practise basic repair techniques. Such learning experiences may also improve learners’ confidence and ability to apply furniture repair knowledge in everyday situations. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected vocational education and skills-development programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of basic furniture repair. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of vocational education on adults’ knowledge of basic furniture repair. The study is expected to establish that vocational education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of basic furniture repair. Adults exposed to relevant vocational learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of furniture defects, appropriate repair materials, basic repair tools, and suitable repair procedures. The study may further indicate that practical demonstrations and supervised activities contribute to better understanding because learners are able to connect theoretical explanations with actual furniture repair situations. The findings are expected to have implications for vocational educators, adult learning facilitators, community skills-development centres, and organisations providing practical training to adults. Vocational education programmes may benefit from incorporating more practical furniture repair activities alongside theoretical explanations. Providing appropriate tools, repair materials, demonstrations, and opportunities for supervised practice may strengthen learners’ understanding and encourage the application of acquired knowledge to household and community maintenance needs. The study will conclude that vocational education can provide an effective means of improving adults’ knowledge of basic furniture repair. It will recommend that vocational education programmes include practical demonstrations, guided repair exercises, appropriate instructional materials, and opportunities for repeated practice. Educators should also encourage learners to identify common furniture defects and select suitable repair procedures based on the nature of each problem. The study will contribute to the development of practical vocational learning programmes that equip adults with useful furniture repair knowledge for everyday and livelihood-related purposes.
