Effect of Vocational Education on Adults’ Ability to Identify Appropriate Sewing Materials

Abstract

Vocational education provides adults with practical knowledge and skills that can enhance their participation in income-generating activities and everyday tasks. Sewing materials such as fabrics, threads, needles, zippers, buttons, interlinings, fasteners, and other accessories are essential for producing and finishing garments. However, inadequate knowledge of sewing materials may make it difficult for adults to select materials that are suitable for particular garment-making activities. This study will examine the effect of vocational education on adults’ ability to identify appropriate sewing materials and determine how vocational learning can improve their understanding and selection of materials for different sewing tasks. Vocational education provides learning experiences through demonstrations, practical exercises, guided activities, discussions, and exposure to relevant tools and materials. In sewing-related programmes, adults can learn to recognize different categories of sewing materials and understand their characteristics, functions, and appropriate uses. Learning activities may involve examining fabrics and accessories, comparing material properties, identifying suitable materials for specific garment types, and matching materials with particular construction or finishing tasks. Such practical experiences can help learners develop the ability to distinguish between materials and make more appropriate selections. Adults’ ability to identify appropriate sewing materials involves recognizing materials and determining their suitability for particular sewing activities. This includes understanding differences in fabric characteristics, thread types, needle sizes, fasteners, decorative materials, and other garment-making accessories. The ability to select appropriate materials can contribute to better planning, efficient use of resources, improved garment quality, and successful completion of sewing tasks. Vocational education may therefore strengthen this ability by providing learners with relevant information and opportunities to examine and apply different sewing materials in practical situations. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected vocational education and skills-development programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate practical identification assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to identify suitable sewing materials. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of vocational education on adults’ ability to identify appropriate sewing materials. The study is expected to establish that participation in vocational education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to identify appropriate sewing materials. It is expected that adults who receive structured vocational learning will demonstrate improved recognition of different sewing materials and greater understanding of their characteristics, functions, and suitability for specific sewing activities. The findings are also expected to indicate that practical exposure and guided material-selection exercises can enhance adults’ ability to make appropriate choices when preparing for garment construction and related sewing tasks. The findings will have implications for vocational education facilitators, Adult Education practitioners, sewing instructors, skills-development centres, and programme developers. Vocational programmes should provide learners with sufficient opportunities to handle, examine, compare, and classify different sewing materials. Practical demonstrations, material-sampling activities, guided selection exercises, and real-life sewing projects can make learning more relevant and help adults develop useful material-selection skills that can be applied during garment production and other sewing activities. The study will be significant to adult learners, vocational training providers, sewing practitioners, community skills programmes, and stakeholders interested in practical livelihood development. It will recommend that vocational education programmes provide adequate sewing materials and practical learning opportunities to strengthen learners’ ability to identify and select materials appropriately. The study will conclude that well-organized vocational education can improve adults’ knowledge of sewing materials and strengthen their ability to make appropriate material choices for different sewing and garment-construction activities.
