Effect of Labour Education Programmes on Adults’ Understanding of Employment Responsibilities
Abstract
Labour education programmes are organized educational activities designed to provide adults with knowledge about employment, workplace expectations, labour practices, rights, and responsibilities, while employment responsibilities refer to the duties, obligations, expected conduct, and work-related commitments that employees are required to fulfil in an employment relationship. Understanding employment responsibilities is important because it can help adults recognize what is expected of them in the workplace and perform their duties appropriately. However, inadequate knowledge of workplace responsibilities may result in misunderstandings of job expectations and employment obligations. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of labour education programmes on adults’ understanding of employment responsibilities. Labour education programmes provide adults with structured opportunities to learn about different aspects of employment and workplace relationships. These programmes may include workshops, lectures, seminars, discussions, practical sessions, and other forms of adult learning. Through such programmes, adults can learn about punctuality, workplace conduct, assigned duties, organizational procedures, confidentiality, communication, accountability, and compliance with workplace rules. The educational content and practical activities provided through labour education can therefore improve adults’ knowledge of the responsibilities associated with employment. Adults’ understanding of employment responsibilities refers to their ability to recognize, explain, and apply knowledge concerning the duties and obligations expected of employees in the workplace. These responsibilities may include completing assigned tasks, observing workplace policies, maintaining professional conduct, protecting organizational information, communicating appropriately, and complying with reasonable workplace requirements. Labour education programmes may influence this understanding by providing adults with relevant information, practical examples, and opportunities to discuss common workplace situations and responsibilities. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults who have participated in or have access to labour education programmes within the selected study area, from which a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on exposure to labour education programmes and adults’ understanding of employment responsibilities. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of labour education programmes on adults’ understanding of employment responsibilities. The study is expected to establish that labour education programmes have a significant effect on adults’ understanding of employment responsibilities. Adults who have greater exposure to labour education programmes are expected to demonstrate better knowledge of workplace duties, organizational expectations, professional conduct, and employment obligations. The findings may also indicate that practical labour education helps adults understand how employment responsibilities should be performed within different workplace situations. The findings will have implications for adult education practice by emphasizing the importance of employment-related learning in preparing adults for responsible participation in the workplace. Adult educators can incorporate practical workplace scenarios, case discussions, role-play activities, and guided instruction into labour education programmes. These approaches can help learners understand employment responsibilities more clearly and apply workplace knowledge to practical situations. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, employees, employers, labour organizations, workplace trainers, and policymakers. Adults may benefit from improved understanding of their workplace duties and obligations, while adult educators may obtain useful information for developing relevant labour education programmes. Employers and workplace trainers may also use the findings to support employee orientation and training activities that promote clearer understanding of workplace responsibilities. The study will recommend that labour education programmes should include practical and easily understandable content on employment duties, workplace conduct, organizational expectations, and employee obligations. Adult educators should use realistic workplace examples, case studies, discussions, and practical exercises to strengthen adults’ understanding of employment responsibilities. Employers and labour organizations should also support educational initiatives that improve workers’ knowledge of workplace expectations. The study concludes that well-designed labour education programmes can strengthen adults’ understanding of employment responsibilities and contribute to more informed and responsible workplace behaviour.
