Effect of Health Literacy Programmes on Adults’ Ability to Understand Prescription Instructions

Abstract

Health literacy programmes refer to organized educational activities designed to improve adults’ ability to obtain, understand, and use health-related information, while the ability to understand prescription instructions refers to adults’ capacity to correctly interpret information about medication dosage, timing, frequency, duration, and precautions. Adequate understanding of prescription instructions is important for safe and effective medication use, yet limited health literacy may make it difficult for some adults to interpret written or verbal medication directions correctly. This study will examine the effect of health literacy programmes on adults’ ability to understand prescription instructions. Health literacy programmes may include lessons on common health terms, medication labels, dosage instructions, prescription abbreviations, treatment schedules, and the interpretation of written health information. Through guided instruction, practical demonstrations, examples, discussions, and learning activities, adults can develop the knowledge and skills needed to interpret prescription-related information more accurately. Such programmes may also strengthen adults’ confidence in seeking clarification when medication instructions are unclear. The ability to understand prescription instructions involves correctly identifying the name of a medicine, prescribed dosage, frequency of use, duration of treatment, method of administration, and relevant precautions. Adults who understand these instructions are more likely to follow medication directions appropriately and avoid mistakes arising from misinterpretation. Health literacy programmes can therefore provide the educational foundation needed to improve adults’ understanding of prescription information and promote safer medication practices. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adult learners participating in selected health literacy or adult education programmes. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a prescription-instruction interpretation assessment designed to measure participants’ exposure to health literacy programmes and their ability to understand prescription instructions. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that participation in health literacy programmes has a positive effect on adults’ ability to understand prescription instructions. It is expected that adults exposed to relevant health literacy education will demonstrate better understanding of medication dosage, timing, frequency, duration, and other prescription-related information than those with limited exposure to such programmes. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in Adult Education by emphasizing the importance of practical health literacy instruction. Adult educators can incorporate medication-label interpretation, prescription-reading exercises, health vocabulary, and practical demonstrations into health education programmes. These approaches can make learning more relevant to adults’ everyday needs and strengthen their ability to apply health information in practical situations. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, healthcare educators, community education providers, healthcare practitioners, and organizations involved in health promotion. Adult learners may benefit from improved skills in interpreting prescription information, while educators can gain evidence for developing more practical health literacy programmes. Healthcare practitioners and community organizations may also use the findings to support educational approaches that improve adults’ understanding of medication instructions. The study recommends that adult education programmes should include practical health literacy activities that focus on interpreting prescription instructions and other common health information. Adult educators should use simple language, demonstrations, examples, and participatory learning methods to improve understanding. Health education providers should also collaborate with relevant healthcare professionals when developing medication-related learning materials. The study concludes that strengthening health literacy education can contribute to improved understanding of prescription instructions and more informed medication use among adults.
