Effect of Fisheries Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Fish Preservation Techniques
Abstract
Fish preservation techniques are methods used to maintain the quality, safety, and usability of fish by slowing deterioration and extending its shelf life. Fisheries education can provide adults with relevant knowledge and practical understanding of appropriate preservation methods and the conditions required for effective preservation. Adequate knowledge of fish preservation is important for reducing spoilage, limiting post-harvest losses, maintaining product quality, and improving the economic value of fish. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of fisheries education on adults’ knowledge of fish preservation techniques. Fisheries education can expose adults to fish preservation techniques through practical demonstrations, group discussions, field activities, guided practice, instructional materials, and experience-based learning. These activities can help learners understand methods such as smoking, drying, salting, icing, chilling, and appropriate storage. Practical demonstrations can further enable adults to understand the steps involved in preparing fish for preservation, selecting suitable preservation methods, maintaining hygiene, and controlling conditions that may accelerate deterioration. Such learning experiences can connect preservation principles with the practical activities of adults involved in fisheries-related livelihoods. Adults’ knowledge of fish preservation techniques refers to their ability to identify, explain, and understand the appropriate methods used to preserve fish and maintain its quality. This includes knowledge of the purpose of different preservation methods, preparation procedures, hygiene requirements, storage conditions, and factors that influence preservation effectiveness. Improved knowledge can help adults select appropriate techniques according to the quantity and intended use of fish while reducing practices that may encourage spoilage or contamination. Fisheries education is therefore expected to strengthen adults’ knowledge by providing relevant information and practical opportunities for learning. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults involved in fishing, fish processing, and related fisheries activities, as well as participants in relevant fisheries education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of fish preservation techniques. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of fisheries education on adults’ knowledge of fish preservation techniques. The study is expected to establish that fisheries education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of fish preservation techniques. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of preservation methods, preparation procedures, hygiene practices, storage requirements, and quality maintenance. The study may also indicate that practical demonstrations and guided learning are useful in helping adults understand how different preservation techniques can be appropriately applied. Such findings would demonstrate the value of fisheries education in developing practical knowledge that can contribute to improved fish preservation practices. The study may have useful implications for fisheries educators, adult educators, fisheries extension workers, fish processors, fishing associations, and community development practitioners. Fisheries education programmes can incorporate practical demonstrations, supervised preservation activities, visual learning materials, and field-based exercises to strengthen adults’ understanding of preservation techniques. Greater attention can also be given to hygiene, storage conditions, equipment use, and appropriate selection of preservation methods. Improved knowledge may help adults apply better preservation practices, reduce avoidable fish losses, and maintain the quality of fish products. The study is significant because improved knowledge of fish preservation techniques can support better post-harvest management, reduce spoilage, improve product quality, and strengthen livelihood activities associated with fisheries. It is recommended that fisheries education programmes provide accessible and practical learning opportunities covering different preservation methods and their appropriate applications. Fisheries educators and extension practitioners should also emphasize hands-on learning and demonstrations that allow adults to relate preservation principles to real-life activities. The study concludes that fisheries education can serve as an important means of improving adults’ knowledge of fish preservation techniques and supporting more effective fish preservation practices.
