Effect of First Aid Learning Programmes on Adults’ Knowledge of Basic Recovery Positions
Abstract
First aid learning programmes provide adults with practical knowledge and competencies that can improve their preparedness to respond appropriately to emergencies. Basic recovery positions refer to safe body positions used to help maintain an open airway in an unconscious person who is breathing normally while appropriate medical assistance is being sought. Knowledge of these positions is important because adults may encounter situations where an injured or unconscious person requires immediate assistance before professional responders arrive. This study will examine the effect of first aid learning programmes on adults’ knowledge of basic recovery positions. First aid learning programmes can provide learning experiences through demonstrations, practical exercises, simulations, visual materials, discussions, and guided practice. These activities can introduce adults to the purpose of recovery positions, situations in which they may be appropriate, and the basic principles involved in positioning a person safely. Demonstrations and supervised practice can enable participants to observe the correct sequence of actions and develop familiarity with the procedure. Scenario-based activities can further help learners connect theoretical knowledge with realistic emergency situations. Knowledge of basic recovery positions involves adults’ understanding of when an appropriate recovery position may be required, the purpose of positioning, and the essential principles for carrying out the procedure safely. It also involves recognizing that recovery positioning is appropriate in specific circumstances and that emergency medical assistance should be sought when necessary. Adequate knowledge can improve adults’ preparedness to respond appropriately while awaiting professional assistance. First aid learning programmes may therefore strengthen this knowledge by combining clear explanations with demonstrations, practical exercises, and supervised learning. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected first aid, Adult Education, community safety, and emergency preparedness programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of basic recovery positions. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of first aid learning programmes on adults’ knowledge of basic recovery positions. The study is expected to establish that first aid learning programmes have a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of basic recovery positions. Adults exposed to structured first aid learning are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of the purpose, appropriate circumstances, and basic principles associated with recovery positioning. The study is also expected to indicate that demonstrations, supervised practical activities, and realistic emergency scenarios can improve adults’ recognition and understanding of appropriate recovery-position procedures. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, first aid instructors, community educators, workplace safety trainers, and programme developers. First aid learning programmes should incorporate practical demonstrations and supervised activities that allow adults to develop familiarity with appropriate recovery-position procedures. Facilitators should also emphasize personal safety, appropriate assessment of emergency situations, and the importance of obtaining professional medical assistance when required. The study will be significant to adult learners, community members, workplace participants, educators, and organizations interested in emergency preparedness and safety education. It will recommend that first aid learning programmes provide accessible and practical instruction on basic recovery positions through demonstrations, guided practice, and scenario-based activities. The study will conclude that appropriately structured first aid learning programmes can improve adults’ knowledge of basic recovery positions and strengthen their preparedness to provide appropriate initial assistance while professional help is being obtained.
