Abstract
Energy education provides adults with opportunities to acquire knowledge that can improve their understanding of energy technologies and their applications in everyday life. One important area is knowledge of battery storage systems, which involves understanding how batteries store electrical energy, the basic components of storage systems, their uses, limitations, and the factors that influence their effective operation. Limited knowledge of battery storage systems may make it difficult for adults to understand their role in supporting reliable electricity supply and the use of renewable energy technologies. This study therefore examines the effect of energy education on adults’ knowledge of battery storage systems, with the aim of determining whether structured energy education can improve adults’ understanding of battery-based energy storage. Energy education can expose adults to battery storage systems through practical demonstrations, workshops, group discussions, educational videos, diagrams, simulations, and hands-on learning activities. These approaches can help learners understand basic concepts such as energy storage, battery capacity, charging and discharging, system components, storage applications, and appropriate maintenance practices. By relating these concepts to familiar household and community energy situations, energy education can make battery storage technology easier for adults to understand and appreciate. Knowledge of battery storage systems involves the ability to identify basic storage components, explain how batteries store and release electrical energy, recognize common applications, understand basic performance characteristics, and identify appropriate care and safety practices. Adults with adequate knowledge may be better positioned to understand the role of battery storage in backup electricity systems, renewable energy applications, and energy management. Energy education can strengthen this knowledge by providing opportunities for adults to examine different storage technologies, interpret basic technical information, and participate in practical learning activities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected energy education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of battery storage systems. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of energy education on adults’ knowledge of battery storage systems. The study is expected to establish that participation in energy education contributes positively to adults’ knowledge of battery storage systems. It is expected that adults exposed to structured learning activities will demonstrate improved understanding of battery storage principles, system components, charging and discharging processes, applications, basic maintenance, and relevant safety considerations. The findings may also indicate that practical demonstrations and visual learning approaches are useful for helping adults understand technical energy concepts and connect them with everyday electricity needs. The findings may have important implications for Adult Education practitioners, energy educators, community educators, renewable energy organizations, and facilitators of energy-awareness programmes. Energy education programmes can incorporate practical demonstrations, simplified technical materials, battery-system illustrations, and activities that enable adults to examine common storage applications. Such approaches may improve adults’ confidence in understanding battery storage technologies and support more informed engagement with emerging energy solutions. The study will be significant to adults, Adult Education practitioners, energy educators, renewable energy organizations, researchers, and policymakers interested in strengthening energy literacy and awareness of modern energy technologies. It is recommended that energy education programmes incorporate relevant learning activities on battery storage principles, system components, applications, maintenance, and safety. The study concludes that appropriately designed energy education can provide an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of battery storage systems and strengthening informed understanding of energy storage technologies.
