Effect of Disaster Awareness Education on Community Emergency Participation
Abstract
Disaster awareness education refers to organized learning activities that provide individuals with knowledge and skills for understanding disaster risks, recognizing warning signs, and responding appropriately during emergencies, while community emergency participation refers to the involvement of community members in activities designed to prepare for, respond to, and manage emergency situations. Effective community participation is important for reducing risks and improving coordinated responses during emergencies. However, limited awareness and inadequate knowledge of appropriate emergency procedures may reduce community involvement in emergency activities. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of disaster awareness education on community emergency participation. Disaster awareness education may involve awareness campaigns, community workshops, safety training, emergency demonstrations, educational discussions, and practical learning activities. These activities can provide community members with knowledge about common hazards, warning signals, emergency procedures, evacuation practices, and appropriate responses to disaster situations. Through repeated exposure to disaster-related education, adults may develop greater awareness and confidence in responding to emergency situations. Community emergency participation involves taking part in emergency drills, evacuation activities, first-response initiatives, safety meetings, emergency awareness programmes, and other community-based activities related to emergency management. Active participation can improve community preparedness and strengthen cooperation during emergency situations. Disaster awareness education may therefore influence emergency participation by providing community members with the knowledge and practical understanding required to recognize risks and respond appropriately. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adults in selected communities. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to disaster awareness education and participation in community emergency activities. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that disaster awareness education has a positive effect on community emergency participation. Community members who receive greater exposure to disaster awareness education are expected to demonstrate stronger willingness and ability to participate in emergency-related activities. The study may further establish that improved knowledge of hazards, warning systems, emergency procedures, and safety practices can encourage more active community involvement during emergency situations. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning because disaster awareness education can provide practical knowledge that adults can apply to real-life emergency situations. Participatory approaches such as demonstrations, simulations, drills, group discussions, and practical exercises can help learners develop a clearer understanding of appropriate emergency responses. Adult educators can therefore integrate practical disaster education into community learning programmes. The study will be beneficial to adults, community leaders, adult education practitioners, emergency management organizations, community-based organizations, education planners, and researchers. Community members may gain useful knowledge for responding to emergencies, while community leaders and emergency organizations may benefit from increased participation in emergency-related activities. Adult education practitioners and education planners may also use the findings to strengthen disaster awareness programmes within communities. The study will recommend that adult education and community learning programmes incorporate practical disaster awareness activities, including emergency drills, demonstrations, safety discussions, and risk-awareness exercises. Community leaders and relevant organizations should also provide regular opportunities for residents to learn and practise appropriate emergency procedures. It is concluded that effective disaster awareness education can improve community members’ knowledge and encourage greater participation in emergency activities.
