Effect of Cultural Education on Adults’ Understanding of Cultural Property Preservation
Abstract
Cultural education provides adults with knowledge and awareness that can promote appreciation, protection, and responsible management of cultural heritage. Cultural property refers to physical objects and resources of cultural, historical, artistic, archaeological, or social significance, including artefacts, monuments, traditional objects, manuscripts, and other heritage materials. Cultural property preservation involves efforts to protect such resources from deterioration, damage, neglect, inappropriate use, and loss. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of cultural education on adults’ understanding of cultural property preservation. The study will focus on how educational experiences can improve adults’ knowledge of the importance, methods, and responsibilities associated with preserving cultural property. Cultural education can expose adults to information about cultural heritage, historical artefacts, traditional objects, monuments, and other forms of cultural property within their communities. Through discussions, demonstrations, exhibitions, community-based activities, and practical learning experiences, adults can develop greater awareness of the value of cultural property and the factors that may threaten its preservation. Such learning experiences may also help adults understand appropriate approaches to protecting, documenting, handling, storing, and maintaining cultural resources for present and future generations. Adults’ understanding of cultural property preservation involves their knowledge of the importance of protecting culturally significant objects and places, identifying preservation threats, and recognizing appropriate preservation practices. It also includes awareness of the responsibilities of individuals and communities in preventing damage, neglect, unauthorized alteration, and loss of cultural resources. Cultural education may strengthen this understanding by providing adults with practical knowledge about preservation principles and opportunities to examine examples of cultural property and the challenges associated with its protection. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected cultural education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ understanding of cultural property preservation. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of cultural education on adults’ understanding of cultural property preservation. The study is expected to establish that cultural education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of cultural property preservation. Adults who participate in relevant educational activities may demonstrate improved knowledge of the value of cultural property, common preservation threats, and appropriate measures for protecting culturally significant resources. The study may further establish that practical exposure to cultural objects and preservation activities can strengthen adults’ awareness of their responsibilities toward cultural heritage. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners, cultural educators, heritage organisations, museums, community leaders, and other stakeholders involved in cultural preservation. Incorporating cultural property preservation into adult learning programmes may provide adults with practical knowledge that can be applied in homes, communities, cultural institutions, and heritage sites. Activities such as cultural documentation, exhibitions, preservation demonstrations, and community heritage projects may also encourage adults to participate more actively in protecting cultural resources. The study will be significant to adult learners, cultural communities, Adult Education practitioners, heritage organisations, museums, cultural institutions, and other stakeholders interested in preserving cultural heritage. It is recommended that cultural education programmes should incorporate practical activities that expose adults to the value of cultural property and appropriate preservation practices. The study concludes that cultural education can serve as an effective avenue for improving adults’ understanding of cultural property preservation and encouraging greater responsibility toward the protection of culturally significant resources.
