Effect of Cultural Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Indigenous Heritage
Abstract
Indigenous heritage comprises the cultural knowledge, traditions, practices, values, artistic expressions, historical experiences, and other forms of heritage associated with indigenous communities and transmitted across generations. Adults need adequate knowledge of indigenous heritage to appreciate its significance, understand its connection with community identity, and contribute to its preservation and continuity. However, limited knowledge of indigenous heritage may weaken cultural awareness and reduce appreciation of important cultural resources. This study will examine the effect of Cultural Education on adults’ knowledge of indigenous heritage. Cultural Education provides opportunities for adults to learn about cultural practices, traditions, historical experiences, indigenous knowledge systems, languages, artistic expressions, and other forms of heritage through discussions, storytelling, demonstrations, exhibitions, community activities, and experience-sharing. These learning approaches can make cultural knowledge more accessible and relevant to adult learners. Cultural Education can also encourage adults to interact with knowledgeable community members and explore the meanings and significance attached to different aspects of indigenous heritage. Knowledge of indigenous heritage refers to adults’ understanding of the traditions, cultural practices, historical experiences, values, knowledge systems, artistic expressions, and other heritage resources associated with indigenous communities. Such knowledge enables adults to recognize the importance of indigenous heritage and understand its role in maintaining cultural identity and continuity. Cultural Education can strengthen this knowledge by providing structured opportunities to examine authentic cultural materials, participate in cultural activities, and engage with intergenerational sources of indigenous knowledge. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Cultural Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate heritage-knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of indigenous heritage. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Cultural Education on adults’ knowledge of indigenous heritage. The study is expected to establish that Cultural Education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of indigenous heritage. Adults exposed to relevant cultural learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of indigenous traditions, practices, values, historical experiences, knowledge systems, and cultural expressions. The study is also expected to indicate that participatory learning approaches, storytelling, cultural demonstrations, and interaction with knowledgeable community members can strengthen adults’ knowledge and appreciation of indigenous heritage. The findings will have implications for Cultural Education practitioners, community educators, cultural organizations, heritage practitioners, and programme planners. Cultural Education programmes should incorporate practical activities that allow adults to engage with indigenous heritage through authentic cultural experiences and locally relevant learning materials. Storytelling, cultural demonstrations, heritage exhibitions, community documentation activities, and intergenerational learning can provide meaningful opportunities for adults to develop stronger knowledge of indigenous heritage. The study will be significant to adult learners, community members, Cultural Education practitioners, cultural organizations, heritage practitioners, and communities concerned with cultural preservation. It is expected to demonstrate the importance of Cultural Education in strengthening adults’ knowledge of indigenous heritage and supporting the transmission of cultural knowledge across generations. The study will recommend greater integration of indigenous heritage content into relevant Cultural Education programmes and the use of participatory approaches that promote cultural learning and preservation. It will conclude that effective Cultural Education can contribute to improved knowledge of indigenous heritage and support greater appreciation, continuity, and preservation of indigenous cultural resources.
