Effect of Community Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Local Development Planning
Abstract
Community education provides adults with opportunities to acquire knowledge that can strengthen their understanding and participation in activities aimed at improving their communities. One important area is knowledge of local development planning, which involves understanding how community needs are identified, priorities are established, resources are considered, and development activities are organized. Limited knowledge of local development planning may reduce adults’ ability to contribute meaningfully to discussions and decisions concerning community development. This study therefore examines the effect of community education on adults’ knowledge of local development planning, with the aim of determining whether community-based learning opportunities can improve adults’ understanding of development planning processes. Community education can expose adults to local development planning through workshops, group discussions, community meetings, case studies, practical exercises, and participatory planning activities. These approaches can help learners understand how community needs are assessed, development priorities are identified, objectives are established, and activities are organized to address local challenges. Through practical learning experiences, adults can examine the roles of community members, leaders, organizations, and other stakeholders in development planning. Such learning can make planning concepts more understandable by connecting educational activities with real community development situations. Knowledge of local development planning involves the ability to identify development needs, understand planning processes, recognize community priorities, and explain how development activities can be organized to achieve specific objectives. Adults with adequate knowledge may be better prepared to contribute ideas, participate in planning discussions, assess proposed development activities, and support community development initiatives. Community education can strengthen this knowledge by providing opportunities for adults to examine local development issues, analyse community needs, and participate in practical planning exercises. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected community education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of local development planning. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of community education on adults’ knowledge of local development planning. The study is expected to establish that participation in community education contributes positively to adults’ knowledge of local development planning. It is expected that adults exposed to structured community education activities will demonstrate improved ability to identify community development needs, understand planning stages, recognize development priorities, and explain the roles of different stakeholders in planning activities. The findings may also indicate that participatory and practical learning approaches provide adults with useful opportunities to relate development planning concepts to actual community challenges. The findings may have important implications for Adult Education practitioners, community development facilitators, community leaders, and organizations involved in local development initiatives. Community education programmes can incorporate practical activities such as community needs assessment, priority-setting exercises, development planning discussions, and analysis of local development proposals. These activities may help adults develop a clearer understanding of planning processes while encouraging informed participation in decisions concerning community development. The study will be significant to adults, community leaders, Adult Education practitioners, community development organizations, researchers, and policymakers interested in strengthening community participation in development planning. It is recommended that community education programmes provide relevant learning opportunities on local development planning and encourage adults to participate in practical planning activities. The study concludes that appropriately designed community education can provide an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of local development planning and strengthening their informed contribution to community development.
